Avocado - the right food for babies from 4 to 6 months
When you start introducing food, one of the warm recommendations between 4 and 6 months is to introduce avokado.
Avocados are available all year round, they are one of the least sprayed fruits, so there is no need to chase organic, and they are rich in nutritional values that your baby needs. Although it is a fruit, due to its neutral taste, it is often served as a vegetable, so you can introduce it into a meal with vegetables or fruit, as you choose. Avocado does not need to be cooked beforehand, you can just mash it with a fork.
By the way, avocados are said to contain all the nutritional values that a person needs to survive. It contains good fats that are needed by the baby's brain and are good for the baby's physical development.
Here is a list of avocado nutritional values for one serving / fresh mash:
Vitamins:
- Vitamin A - 338 IU
- Vitamin C - 20,2 mg
- Vitamin B1 – (thiamine) – .2 mg
- Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) – .3 mg
- Niacin – 3.9 mg
- Folate – 205 mg
- Pantothenic Acid - 3.3 mg
- Vitamin B6 – .6 mg and other vitamins in a small amount.
Minerals:
- Potassium – 1166 mg
- Phosphorus – 124 mg
- Magnesium – 67 mg
- Calcium – 30 mg
- Sodium – 18 mg
- Beef - 1.4 mg
- It also contains small amounts of selenium, manganese, copper and zinc.
Babies generally like avocado because of its creamy texture, and it can be mixed with apple, peach, plum, banana, and from 8 months even yogurt.
If someone tells you that avocados contain too much fat, know that we are talking about fats that are good for your baby. A baby needs a lot of fat during this crucial period of development. One medium-sized avocado contains roughly 322 calories and about 30 grams of fat. But, I note again that these fats are from the category of good fats and will not affect the baby's weight gain.
Allergies
Avocados are associated with latex allergies and sensitivities to them, so if someone in the family has this type of allergy, consult a pediatrician before introducing avocados. Latex allergy usually occurs when eating banana, avocado, papaya and kiwi.
How to choose?
Avocados should be dark green in color and have a rough texture. It should be firm, but feel soft when squeezed. Then it is ideal. See picture.
How is it being prepared?
Avocados he doesn't cook. It is necessary to cut it in half, remove the stone and then remove the contents with a spoon. You can also peel it if it's easier for you and then cut it into cubes.
It is enough to mash it with a fork and initially you can dilute it with a little water or formula or breast milk. When mixing it with other fruits, you can also use a blender until you get an even mushy mass.
It is not recommended to keep the avocado in the refrigerator, once you chew it, but you can freeze the rest by cutting it into pieces, and adding a few drops of lemon (this is only after the introduction of citrus fruits) and a little water to prevent discoloration. Although, I always recommend buying fresh for the day you decide to give to your baby.
Recipes for a 4-6 month old baby
Avocado puree:
- ½ avocado
- breast or formula milk
Scoop out the soft contents of the avocado and mash it with a fork, just as you would when making banana puree. Avocado has a soft texture and does not need to be cooked beforehand. Add a little breast milk or formula to dilute the texture and make it easier for baby to eat. As you give it more often, you reduce the dilution process.
Avocado and banana puree:
- ½ avocado
- ½ banana
Peel the avocado and banana and mash both with a fork.
Avocado Fruit Salad:
- ½ avocado
- ½ banana
- 2 plums (fresh) steamed and peeled
- yogurt (after 8 months you can add a little yogurt)
Put everything peeled and cut into cubes in a blender and blend until you get the desired consistency of porridge.
Avocado and Zucchini:
- ½ avocado
- ½ zucchini
Peel the avocado and squash. Peel the zucchini (the peel usually retains most of the poison), chop it into small pieces and put it in cold water. Boil the zucchini for about 5-8 minutes (calculated from the moment the water boils). Strain the zucchini and add it to the blender with the pieces of avocado and blend well.
From 6 months onwards, you can mix avocado with any fruit you introduce to your baby, including peaches and apricots, and before that mix it with banana and apple.
If you serve avocado as lunch, instead of vegetables, you can later mix it with chicken, and immediately you can mix it with zucchini and sweet pumpkin.
My Lena simply loves avocado, so I highly recommend it to everyone, because she also had no problems with bloating and stomach upset after it.
