So, let me quote something. Socrates allegedly (I didn't check, the quote just came to me) uttered these few sentences, each of which irrefutably confirms the previous one:
"Democracy will suffer because he will try to please everyone. The poor will claim the property of the rich. And democracy will give them that. The young will demand to be respected like the old, women will want to be like men, foreigners will demand the rights of the natives. And democracy will give them that. Thieves and swindlers will want important government positions. And democracy will give them that. And when thieves and swindlers finally democratically take power, because criminals and criminals strive for power, a worse tyranny will arise than under any previous monarchy or oligarchy.”
Allegedly, Socrates said it in one breath and in one day, a day that fell somewhere between 470 and 399 BC. Whether he had a full 71 or just one year of life (which I doubt) is irrelevant, but the point is certainly the most important: to see how it was once upon a time in decadent Ancient Greece. Fortunately, we avoided these pitfalls of democracy, so today we enjoy the undisturbed idyll of the 21st century.
