Moms are aware that it is completely natural, desirable and healthy for children to spend time outside even when it's cold, but on the other hand, the instinct that tells us to protect our cubs often overpowers us, so we choose to spend time indoors, and not outside.

There are several very effective ways to keep a child safe and protected while outside, and there are many more benefits to be gained from spending time in the cold. We reveal both to you.

Bacteria hide in closed spaces

It is impossible to completely isolate and protect your little ones from the bacteria that make them sick, especially in winter when there are more viruses and bacteria than usual. On the other hand, if you allow children to naturally come into contact with some bacteria, it will reduce the chances that they will develop some autoimmune disorders and allergies. The Centers for Disease Control say that children's immunity is strengthened by letting them go outside. It is important that children spend time in the fresh air because the bacteria that we bring into the house are persistently recycled and the more time we spend indoors, the more susceptible we are to bacteria. Likewise, you surely know that viruses are more easily transmitted from person to person if you often stay in closed rooms that are not irradiated in the winter. The conclusion is that even if you don't take your child outside, be sure to ventilate the rooms often.

Snow is the perfect opportunity for physical activity

Experts say that children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and exercising during the winter can be even more effective than usual. When children walk through the snow, they use larger muscle groups and need more strength (just like adults) to move, especially snowshoeing, running, sledding... If you limit children's time outside too much during the winter, those muscle groups will become lazy. later it can cause numerous health problems. If your little ones play outside, they will sleep better, their appetite will be better and therefore they will be in a better mood.

Playing in the snow develops the imagination

Snow presents children with completely new challenges, both psychological and cognitive. For example, benches and swings in the park are covered with snow or frozen in winter, so children should use their imagination and resourcefulness to find a way to reuse them or find suitable replacements. Playing winter games requires certain skills (how to avoid objects on the track while sledding, how to make a snowball so it doesn't fall apart), and that's why winter is the perfect time of year to develop them.

Vitamin D is also very important in winter

Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium in the bones and helps the bones to be firm and strong. One of the best ways to get enough of this vitamin is to spend as much time as possible outside, especially when it's sunny because very few foods contain it. This vitamin is created in the skin when the skin is exposed to sunlight, and it has been proven to change the level of serotonin in the brain. In layman's terms, the more time you spend in the sun, the better your mood will be.

How to protect children in the snow

  • Schedule time for children to spend outside with short breaks to rest and warm up.
  • Dress children for snow in layers.
  • Do not allow children to spend a lot of time outside in extremely cold temperatures.
  • Always dress them one layer less than you.
  • Check that the place where the children will play is safe (that there are no hidden sharp and hard objects under the snow, that there is no ice).
