Bački Jarak, November 4, 2015 - DTD Ribarstvo from Bački Jark, a leading distributor of fish and fish products, is also the place where the only hummus factory in Serbia is located.

This spread, originally from the Middle East, has been produced in Vojvodina for three years and sales results show that customers' interest in hummus is continuously growing. Sales results in the only hummus factory in Serbia have increased by 100% compared to last year and further growth is planned. In this factory, they currently produce hummus in seven different flavors, but in the next year they plan to enrich the range with two more new flavors.

Consumers in Serbia have discovered that hummus is a simple, tasty and, at the same time, very healthy meal, and this, they say in this factory, is the reason behind their growing interest in this product.

"DTD Ribarstvo is known on the market for the production and cultivation of fish and fish products, as well as for the production concept "from field to table". We oversee the entire chain - we produce fish feed, raise fish, make fish products - we have complete control over the production process. We have been operating in the healthy food segment for years, and it was logical to expand the range and enrich it with food that does not exist on our market and belongs to one of the highest quality and healthiest foods", Ljiljana Popadić, spokesperson for DTD Ribarstvo, told reporters.

The recipe for making hummus in Bački Jark arrived a few years ago directly from Lebanon. Namely, when the owner of the company decided to start a plant for the production of hummus, he traveled to this Middle Eastern country and received an original recipe from a chef from a Lebanese hummus bar, which we later adapted and applied in Serbia, added Popadić.

"The hummus we produce has a shelf life of three months because it is canned." Canning is an advanced method of preserving the quality and correctness of food and is necessary in modern food production. Ribella Hummus contains the preservatives sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, and thanks to the presence of these preservatives, a longer product shelf life is achieved," Ina Mioč, chief technologist at DTD Fisheries, responsible for food quality, explained to journalists.

What is hummus?

Hummus is a spread made from chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and tahini or sesame paste.

Considering that all four ingredients of hummus are a source of important nutrients, it is clear why this spread was given the epithet "the healthiest spread in the world".

Chickpeas are full of protein, prolong the feeling of satiety and stimulate the bowels. That's why hummus is a good ally in regulating cholesterol and high blood sugar. Sesame, research shows, has a beneficial effect on women in menopause and also eases the symptoms of PMS. The antibacterial and antiviral properties of garlic are known, and lemon is the king of vitamin C.

Can hummus replace meat?

Hummus contains 17% protein, and that's why consuming hummus gives you a feeling of satiety. In this sense, it can be a solid substitute for meat, but the technologists of DTD Ribarstvo recommend a balanced diet and recommend the intake of foods that contain proteins of different amino acid composition. Therefore, the human body also needs proteins from meat, not only from plants.
