Years of "ventilator" living

If I were a tycoon, the enthusiastic majority would certainly welcome my need to share everything with others. Since I'm not, I share less tangible artifacts with a tiny fraction of the majority: music, media, human technology, and flying. During these years, quite a lot of "bakes" have accumulated, so, I sincerely hope, by the end of my life, the number of potholes on the road leading to perfection will be significantly reduced...

Listen to ZAIR, show 903, Saturday 10 February 2018.

Ha, joke-comedian, forget it! What, man, perfection. Dark job! (a well-worn joke of Anglo-literalists when they translate "just right" into English) 🙂 But, well, some people see perfection in exclusivity, although I'm not really inclined to it. Exclusivity breaks you into tiny pieces due to the chronic stress of having to get everything before everyone else, and this breaks restful sleep and leads to atrophy of the peripheral nervous system. Avangarda, for example, is a more pleasant partner. As a damned populist, I'm constantly looking for packaging to wrap some under-circulated, yet attractive idea. This is difficult to do in autistic companionship with one's own self. It's easier in society - people communicate with each other on the basis of mutual associations. Exclusivity is a solitary business, while avant-garde requires teamwork.

Was my show "Ventilator 202" from THOSE eighties an avant-garde project? She certainly wasn't at the start. After leaving Studio B (from where I left partly because of injured self-esteem, and partly because of the idea of myself as a pilot) and an incubation period of several years, it dawned on Radio Belgrade that it could remove from me the anathema of a "destructive" presenter with the same, and even competing radio stations. So I got stuck on Beograd 202, a parallel free-radio with a stronger technical base and better audibility.

Documentary reportage of the "Radio TV Review" from 1982, when Modly hosted the three-hour program "Ventilator 202" from the plane while piloting it.

What should be the leitmotif of the show with the stupid name "Ventilator"? - I asked myself then. I already mastered the predictable "warm in winter and cool in summer" in the first season, and at the same time I didn't move a step forward. It was basically music (late disco, rock and roll classics, post-punk and the embryos of the domestic new wave), but there was no idea that would refine the form and, more importantly, give it a purpose. I tried, like a professional pilot, to turn the plane into a flying studio, so that some shows were completely from the air, and some were a little from the air, and a little from the ground. But there was still no substance. I tapped, a little in the air, a little on the ground.

Everything changed when I ran away from the quintet of editor-host-sound engineer-musician-organizer, i.e. from the team that has signed every broadcast of Radio Belgrade since time immemorial. It has its advantages, I wouldn't want to sin my soul. There is - if you host the news of the day, read poetry, do sports shows or make contact programs. I don't make it. I wanted to be the only driver of the carriage, but also the horse that pulls it. That's why I ran from editor to editor and from director to director for a week or two, until I finally got what I wanted: "my" studio, where I will be the undisputed boss!

Part of the editorial staff of "Index 202" from 1983 together with Zoran in studio VIa while the opening credits of his show "Ventilator 202" are playing

It was, now anthologically speaking, the "six A" studio, a modestly equipped and poorly used journalistic studio. Far from the editorial rooms, shrewd porters and smoky daily newsrooms, buried deep in the basement of Radio Belgrade, on Saturday afternoons it would be "linked" to the transmitter for live broadcasts. Being a do-it-yourselfer, "Ventilator" became the first "self-ops" show in the South at that time. And then a new team began to swarm - enthusiasts without a radio pedigree, high school students who shied away from official Radio, students from "disorganized" faculties, but also listeners of the show who suddenly became part of the team.

In the gungula, to which I was consciously adding a degree or two Celsius, the show made itself. I would be lying if I said that I knew how it would start, and even more so how it would end, but that's why it all gave birth to "demos" (heroes for a day, some of them immortalized on three demo-top albums), a competition of "home disc jockey" (where the wonderful and for me still immortal Robert Klein was introduced to the world for the first time, then a teenager armed with a microphone and two tape recorders), outings outside the studio, a handful of new media personalities, the strangest small ads, first-hand promotions, direct inclusions into the programs of non-establishment stations throughout this region, the computer market and, of course – computers on the radio! It was a bunch of frogs and toads in one bag, which makes me extremely proud of "Ventilator".

I'm not sure that anything from that milieu has been preserved. Maybe a couple of cassette tapes with ripped shows, mostly thanks to other people (the urge to keep everything I don't need only caught up with me in my later years!). I thought that I would somehow collect it and, as a small "radio museum", add it to my internet presentation at www.modli.rs ... one day, or night. Not yet.

"Modulations" were a natural continuation of "Ventilator", through the nineties. But, keep in mind that nothing was the same as before, no matter how hard I tried to convince the casual listeners of my shows that life is full of promising questions, not just devastating answers... And the little influence that the radio had rang out pathos – or scattered to hundreds of radio castratos. A rather chaotic lethargy has taken over, and now I seem to see it again, among the people I know and meet. Some have completely broken, some have picked up their snot and left, some are gathering their snot to leave, and many are no longer in their usual aggregate state - sometimes, reading the dear names from the covers of "Ventilator's" demo records, I have the impression that I am reading, you already know, those "news from the country" from the back pages of daily newspapers.

God, even then many of them were twice my age…

Among the 50 owners of this year's "Top 50 best..." sticker of the PC Press magazine is...

N1 as the best information portal

N1 is the best information portal. Or, to be more clear: the expert jury of the editors of the "PC Press" magazine declared N1 the best site in 2017 in the "News and Information" category.

When the executors evict the single mother from the apartment, when the court returns you to work, and the defendant again refuses to accept you, when all the doors are closed in your face because you are nobody's and not somebody's, when the country you trusted turns its back on you - who is left for you then, on whose shoulder do you cry? Most often, only N1 remains. Do you remember how, when you were still doing well, you called them "that American television"? Now, when you have a bad start, most people turn their heads. But that's why N1 will send a reporter. To inquire about your fate, to find out firsthand who is harassing you from above, to look for the culprit at the cost of a wall of silence or an avalanche of threats from above and below. He will do anything, he just won't remain indifferent. In good times it is easy to be optimistic, people see themselves in trouble. I have always considered that a patriot is above all a humanist, because a nationalist can be any fool - especially if she is ordered to do so.

Should we remind you of one of the (mostly similar) versions of the song "First they came..." attributed to pastor Martin Nemoler (died in 1984): "First they came for the communists, and I didn't rebel because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not rebel because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't rebel because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, but then there was no one left to rebel." I always remember that when the stronger points the finger at the weaker, when the stupid threatens the smarter, when the bastard saddles the good, when the mass seduces the terror of the majority.

Some people and some institutions exist precisely so that, if you rebel, the darkness will not consume you. N1 is among them. That's why I'm glad that their portal was declared the best information portal in the past year. It is nice that they are followed closely by "Krik", "Danas", "Nedeljnik" and, as the fifth in the group, last year's winner RTS, which, if it is no longer a media sympathizer of the opposition, at least remains a house with the most decent and richest offer of all other media genres. .

And now here's some insider information: I almost won the Top 50 in the "Social Networks" category! I found out, namely, that the female part of the PC Press jury suggested my Facebook corner (the very one you're on!) for the favorite in this discipline. But in bad times, the other part of the commission realized that it is against the rules to reward someone's Facebook status; only the Facebook page is recognized, not the profile - period! So I fade out... 🙂 At least until the rules of the game change.

How lucky I am, it will never happen...
