Interview with... Darko Mitrović, Dare Razgibanje

This time our guest was the famous radio host Darko Mitrović, better known as Dare Razgibanavanje.

As one of the few authentic urban Belgrade characters, Darko tries to maintain his integrity in everything he does, to give everything his special, personal stamp. Without a hair on his tongue, mentally flexible, sharp, he is always ready for satire, which he pushes beyond imaginary boundaries and established templates. He does not agree to rotten compromises, sometimes even to his own detriment. He says that he has been banned many times, never silenced.

He is currently doing his favorite show "Razjibavanje" on Radio Laguna.

Dare Stretching, just for you…

I heard yesterday in Razgibanje that a new stand-up version is coming soon in Kragujevac. Can you tell us more about that?

I was almost on one television, it doesn't matter which one, and the presenter said to me: "Have you tried doing stand-up." hahaha... I've been doing stand-up for years. So, I'm not in those associations, I don't like to belong to those castes, sects, clans, associations... I work solo, and I have a huge and loyal audience, which loves and follows me wherever I perform. I worked a lot in clubs in Belgrade, I also performed in Mikser, but also in some smaller clubs. Personally, I prefer to work in smaller clubs. There is a more intimate atmosphere and people are more relaxed. Here, stand-up is still a new thing, people are tense and when you appear on stage, everyone is kind of stiff, as if they should perform and not you! I had a lot of performances in Serbia as well. In a few days, on May 20 to be exact, I will be performing in Kragujevac on Stage 303 of the Children's Theater. I don't know how they will accept me, after all, it is the city of our President... So I worry about how they will react, how will they accept me? Of course I'm joking. Stand up is a specific form, although many perceive it as standing with a microphone. You can also sit, but it doesn't matter! It's an attitude, it's a serious attitude about everything, without holding back, without hair on the tongue, without any censorship, auto-censorship, and I'm pretty hardcore! Of course I have role models in that world, they are legends like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Lewis CK and other "sick people" who don't "cut" anyone. And whose humor cuts like a sword. So I hope that I will do well in Kragujevac too! There is no reason why it shouldn't be. I don't know if they sold out all the tickets, it's in their organization, but I hear there is a lot of interest! And I'm looking forward to it, to tell you the truth. I can't wait for May 20 to come to Kragujevac and climb the boards that mean life...

If we talk about the stand up genre, what is the relationship between script and improvisation? I've heard from some stand up comedians that they like it to be 70 : 30, or something like that? Or is it all improvisation, or is it all scripted?

Mostly everything is a script. I mean, of course I improvise, but only when I feel like it. Improvisation without preparation is nothing... When I'm in the mood and when the audience opens up, relaxes and starts participating, then I talk too. Normally, my performance lasts up to 60 minutes, but I used to talk for an hour and a half. Everything depends on various factors... There are those characters who go to improvisation: like 50% text, 50% jokes, but that's more for those from Audition on Pink! They are the kings of comedy after all (this is sarcasm). Because of them, the owners of some beer bars call me and ask if I could wear a wig and tell jokes, spoil the people a little while they drink klekovača! It's not his fault, he saw it on Pink and thinks that's how it should be. Complete idiocy. Stand up is not cheap jokes!!

That's a little different?

In my case, the whole story is connected, everything is like a play from my life... It is difficult to write a good text and collect material. The great George Carlin collected material for his first stand up for 4 years! So he was again unsure about the quality of his performance. Here, club owners ask you to have two new texts every month - which is abnormal and unfeasible. I just can't get around to learning it, let alone doing it well. There are examples when I succeed in this. I recently worked at the Metropolis Music House, two shows in a row! By the way, my good friend and colleague Brakus (Igor Brakus, editor's note) works there as manager and PR, who suggested this crazy stand-up marathon to me: "Dare, could you do one show at 6 and one at 9?" And I agree... And really, it was a lot and really good, twice. The first performance was phenomenal, the audience was wonderful, even I was satisfied with myself, it lasted an hour and twenty minutes. And the second, the second I barely pushed through. Having two performances in a row is completely suicidal!

So most of it is a script after all?

Absolutely no one else can write the text for you. Once I allowed myself that unnecessary luxury and tried to work with someone else's text, but it didn't turn out to be a good solution. Simple - he is not me! My lyrics are brutal, full of black humor and political sarcasm, sex. And I'm slowly getting the audience used to something like that. However, it's all still new here, although there are a lot of good stand-up comedians who are trying the same thing as me. To get the audience used to that kind of comedy. Now I can already say that I've been on stage for quite a long time, that I'm experienced but also that I'm "nasty" on stage... Of course, not in a bad way. But I think I'm totally different from everyone currently in this business...

You mentioned that you are interested in publishing a book?

Now I work at Radio Laguna... The owner is also the owner of the publishing house Laguna... So if he likes this book of mine, which I've been writing for six months, although I've written very little in all this time, here I am in literary waters... I thought I would have thought that I would publish a book that would automatically win the NIN Award, and then the Nobel Prize for Literature, and I barely moved away from the foreword… hahaha. The book will be a collection of unusual stories with even more unusual endings. I guess!? People expect some kind of comedy, satire from me, but deep down I'm a tragedian. Behind every comedian there is a tragedian. I think that was said by my friend Ljuba Bandović, a great actor and an even greater man. I want people to say, "I didn't know about this side of him" when they read my book. Regardless of the fact that everyone expects comedy, I want to give them, first of all, the complete and true me. Because I'm not just that guy on the radio, who talks about everything. I am much more and deeper than that. If everything goes well - maybe September. Maybe? That's how I plan. But as our elders say: "Plan, so that God laughs at you"!

Any other plans?

I realized that the best thing in life is not to have any long-term plans, big ones. I have a plan to write a book and publish it. I have a plan to continue working where I love the most, on the radio. And that's all I'm allowed to plan.

World trends are the Internet as the main "stage" - that is, Internet radio and maybe some Internet video, are you interested in that?

Recently, I hosted Marko Vidojković in Stretching on Radio Laguna and I asked him to make something together... Maybe on YouTube. He accepted it with enthusiasm. Nothing is certain or definitive. Take it easy, we'll see where we go with it. If I were to do something, I would only do it that way and not with everyone. But it doesn't occur to me to record all kinds of nonsense every now and then.

As far as plans go, that's it. I don't want to force myself and I don't like anything by force. For now, I'm where I am and I'm happy there. For a change, I would like to survive on some radio and for once the listeners know where they can hear me. Because as soon as they find out where I am, I change the station. And it's not up to me! Maybe a little. Because if I, perhaps, would shut up when I needed to, everything would be fine. If I talked about the weather, about how beautiful life is in Serbia, how it will get better, how there are no hungry people, how wonderful it is that a wide-body plane has arrived at the Nikola Tesla airport, I would probably have a better time in life. But that is not my goal. I respect myself first, and then my listeners. I can't turn my head to injustice, and after all, I won't. As for internet radio, there's no need to open it for now, I'm working on Radio Laguna. I'm fine there.

A little bit about food, since this is the portal Recipes and Cooking Online, what is your favorite in a homely atmosphere? Do you have a family favorite?

I have to admit that I don't know how to cook and I'm pretty inept at a lot of things, and I don't just mean cooking. My wife really cooks well, I have to say, she really does! I'm a lover Italian cuisine. It is food that I can always eat, and we eat it most of the time. From childhood when my grandmother used to make "pastashuta" to various other Italian dishes, including all types of pasta, even those without meat. I'm a big fan of Italian food. I also like home cooking, of course. I am very simple about it. I don't like fancy restaurants, it's for snobs who like huge plates with something in the middle, which should represent the Chef's experience of food in an artistic way. And all that is great, but for painting... It's pointless to me. When I eat, I like to eat. In restaurants, I usually always order the same thing.

What do you like to eat as a family in a restaurant?

Vienna schnitzel, I said as if from a cannon. Full standard. And I love the most lasagna, it is my favorite dish. I can always have lasagna! For breakfast, lunch, dinner, lasagna for snack, lasagna as dessert. Lasagna forever... hahaha

It's also Garfield's favorite food?

Yes, I can always do that... But I like to try new things sometimes. And I tried everything and anything. In Africa, specifically Botswana, I tried some of their grilled worms. These are worms the size of that smokey on steroids. And that's how they taste.

Yes, I saw that…

Something like California worms... Well, they also eat beef sticks, which you can buy at every turn. And I tried something else, but I don't know what. I didn't even dare to ask, I was afraid of what they would tell me... Watching that show on 24Kitchen with that character who eats bizarre food, I realized that I wouldn't really try everything.

Do you have a desire to visit a country, because of the cuisine, to try something you haven't tried?

About four years ago, I was in Spain, and I didn't try any of their national dishes! We ate at Burger King! Jerk! I didn't try tapas, I didn't try paella, I didn't try anything! Only I can do that! You have to be a big idiot to do something like that, or rather not do it. But, maybe I would like to try, Japanese cuisine? I've tried Sushi, but I believe there's a lot to try there. I love their dedication, and they don't eat anything. At least that's what I've heard from my friend Bob Živković, who is completely enamored with their culture, and I assume also with their food. Before going to bed, I switch to 24Kitchen and watch those wonderful and creative shows. It calms me down. I especially enjoy the Bourdain show (Anthony Bourdain), I love watching him. It is a combination of a well-directed show and a fun food show. When I look at him, I would try anything he does!

Finally, some favorite treat, some cake, what would it be?

Let's say I love it Tiramisu, it's one of my favorite cakes. I love spanish wind, that's what my wife makes for my birthday every year. I also like muffins. And as a kid I loved to eat parties, although I still love them to this day. Once upon a time, since I was born and grew up in Zemun, I used to eat the most beautiful buns in the famous pastry shop Korzo, now Korzo is no longer there, there is some sports equipment store, it doesn't matter... Even today when I eat buns, I feel that taste of childhood in my mouth...
