When to introduce baby kale?

Kale can be introduced into the baby's diet between 6-8. months of life, although the opinion about it is quite divided. Some manufacturers have included kale in the ingredients of porridges, for ages 6+ months, so as with everything, it is best to consult with your pediatrician about the introduction of this food as well.

Kale consists of rough leaves and is classified as a vegetable and was named one of the healthiest foods by the National Institute of Health in 2014. Some even call kale a "super" food because it is a highly nutritious food, rich in fiber and protein, but low in calories and fat. Kale can be green or even purple, so there are several types, not just one.

Although it looks like a lettuce, its closest relative is actually wild cabbage and belongs to the same group as broccoli and cauliflower.

Values of kale for my baby?

Kale contains a handful of vitamins A, C, K, folic acid, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, as well as in smaller amounts thiamine, niacin, vitamin B6 and B12.

Interesting: Kale contains more calcium than cow's milk. Kale contains 150mg of calcium in 100g, while milk contains 125mg. Also, in a 1990 study, it was proven that calcium from kale is more easily absorbed and therefore the body receives a larger amount. Therefore, your baby can get the necessary dose of calcium only thanks to kale.

Choosing kale and storing it?

Experts recommend that whenever possible, you buy organic kale.

How to choose kale for a baby? Kale comes in two basic forms – smooth leaves or curly curly leaves. Smooth-leaf kale is sweeter than curly or purple kale. When choosing kale, choose fresh, brightly colored leaves that have not dried. Do not buy kale if it is yellowish in color, or brownish and has holes in it. If possible, take young heads of kale whose leaves are much more tender and sweet.

You can keep kale in the fridge for up to 5 days, but it is advised to prepare it as soon as possible, because the longer it sits, the more bitter it can become. Also, do not wash kale before use, as moisture shortens its life.

Does kale contain oxalates and is it harmful?

Oxalates can be found in nature as a substance in plants, animals and humans. Kale does not have a large amount of oxalate like spinach. For example, one cup of kale contains 2 mg of oxalate, while spinach contains 656 mg of oxalate, for the same amount.

Nitrates in kale?

Like oscillates, kale also contains nitrates. The amount of nitrate will depend, of course, on the method of cultivation and the age of the plant. The amount of nitrates in kale is significantly lower than in lettuce, spinach and carrots. Also, thanks to the large amount of vitamin C, which kale contains, it can protect the body from the nitrates it contains.

How to cook kale?

Kale should be cooked for about 5 minutes from boiling, or in the microwave for 7 minutes, at the highest temperature, stirring halfway through. If you are cooking on the stove, then you need to add a little water to the pureed kale during the blending process, so that it gets the texture of porridge. If you cook in the microwave, it is not necessary to add water afterward.
