Sauerkraut with potatoes – sauerkraut season is slowly coming to an end. One or two more cookings and that's it until next winter. I have already mentioned that I divide the food and dishes into winter and summer. Sauerkraut is definitely a symbol of winter.

From sauerkraut, I usually prepare various lean sarma, but also podvarak. Sauerkraut can be prepared in many ways, and one of them is this one with potatoes.

Sauerkraut with potatoes, ingredients:

• 1 small head of sauerkraut (approx. 1 kg)
• 3 large potatoes
• 2 bay leaves
• 1 large onion
• 3 cloves of garlic
• 1/2 dl of oil
• 1 spoon of allspice
• 1 teaspoon cumin
• ground pepper and hot pepper to taste
• 1 tablespoon ground dried vegetables (or spice mix)

Preparation:

• Prepare a pressure cooker (or a regular one, but cooking will take a little longer).
• Pour the oil, cumin and pepper into a small saucepan.
• Fry on a low temperature until the cumin seeds start to pop.
• Add the bell pepper, fry it for a few seconds, then pour in a cup of water and the rest of the spices.
• Cut the cabbage and potatoes into pieces of the desired size.
• Finely chop the onion and garlic.
• At the bottom of the pot, put sauerkraut, then potatoes, onions and garlic, and finally cabbage again.
• Pour over the spice and oil mixture you made.
• Add 1 more cup of water.
• Cook cabbage with potatoes for about half an hour in a pressure cooker.
• If there is too much liquid left, according to your taste, cook the cabbage a little longer in an open pot.

If you cook cabbage and potatoes in a regular pot, add more water from time to time so that everything is cooked well. Finally, uncover the pot and cook until the water has almost completely evaporated.

Note:

• You can cover the cabbage with potatoes with brine instead of water, depending on your taste.
• For those who do not like the combination of potatoes and sauerkraut, I suggest boiled corn grits or polenta.
• With sauerkraut prepared in this way, you can add meat of your choice.
