The name borrowed from our title: "Love and fashion" - to clarify for some younger readers, is the name of a famous Yugoslav film from 1960 - and it best, in a few words, summarizes the career and life of Valentina Obradović so far. This title is missing another word: art. Because what Valentina has been doing since 1999, we can, without any hesitation, classify it as art. Valentina Obradović is employed as a fashion designer in a famous fashion house Aphrodite Fashion Collection and he says that his fashion creations are romantic.
When passion is added to love, fashion, art, the end result is LOVE. Something to which she adds her inner emotion, romance, changeability, and love is the main motive.
I do this work out of love. I create with love.
What would be the common denominator, something that simply describes your work in fashion design so far?
With the first question, you make me think deeply. It is not easy to describe EVERYTHING in one word. And yet, I come up with one. With my creations all these years, I have been trying to portray as faithfully as possible: ATTITUDE.
What is fashion to you?
Fashion is the way the eye reads thought: your yellow dress speaks of an eccentric, sociable, but also a little jealous person, your jeans in your sixties speak of your need to preserve the girl in you, your glasses 'for vision', and without dioptres speak about the fact that you want to be recognized in the environment as a person worthy of the ear, and not just the eye,... and so, a series of signals with which, consciously or unconsciously, we address the world. We, the professionals, recognize them, especially we, for whom psychology is equally important with the history of art, fashion, painting, statistics... when creating collections.
So, for me, fashion is a profession in which I found other professions that I was inclined to: psychology, literature, art history,...
How important is love for work, for fashion, for your success?
Love is the basic motive of every success, and passion is its driving force!
How was the LOVE line created?
The LOVE line has been with me since I entered the world of fashion (1999). I do this work out of love. I create with love. With the support of someone's love, I create. The models themselves bring a strange feeling of love when you put them on…
And the LOVE line officially happened in 2013: as a member of BFW Design Collective, CLICK fashion studio, I participated in BELGRADE FASHION WEEK. For that occasion, I made two t-shirts with the words of the writers I love, put my heart on them, put on some big skirts,... and suddenly skirts, and especially t-shirts, started to be massively requested... I guess cloths are available to people, but clothes that it carries a message - it was something that moved them. Everyone wanted to be dressed in the words of Miroslav Antić, Boris Vijan,... later all those I like to read, listen to,... There is even a t-shirt with a verse: You, suddenly you in a drop of rain. You, suddenly you, and it seemed never again... reached the very source, Massimo who sings that verse. He saw her, wished and LOVE came to him.
What are your further plans (for the LOVE collection, as well as for other spheres of your interest)?
Afrodite Mode Collection is the first love. It has been going on for more than fourteen years. AMC taught me many things in creation, that creation is: responsibility, the golden intersection between aesthetics, functionality and economy, that creation is teamwork, one big orchestra in which you know who plays which instrument and anyone who disturbs harmony does not show beauty of his instrument, not even courage, but destroys the harmony of the work. With AMC, I'm picking up where we left off after this short summer vacation...
The LOVE line is growing at the same time. In addition to the Facebook page (Love by Valentina) and Instagram pages (Love_by_Valentina), now LOVE has also received a "land" address: BELGRADE DESIGN DISTRICT, Atelje ALTERNATIVA, Čumićevo sokače, local 5 (ground floor). Visit her! This LOVE comes to the address, but it is often better to look for it ourselves!
In your opinion, how important is the artistic (design) approach in food presentation?
Just as fashion has long since ceased to be a response to weather (un)opportunities, so food has long since ceased to satisfy the need for satiety. It is very important what we eat, but also how we eat. I love and follow both the ways of preparation and the ways of arranging. It is very important to me to make someone happy with something I have made. Since I'm not a typical housewife, I often use beautiful plates, candles, napkins,... the ambiance to make it the most delicious food they've eaten. 😉
What is your favorite dish that you prepare as a family?
Caesar salad! I put seafood in it when we crave summer and waves, I spread shells on the table, put striped coasters, plates with fish, white wine in crystal glasses,... or I replace seafood with chicken - when we just need healthy energy!
I love making chocolate chip muffins with vanilla ice cream. They are eaten still hot, when I arrange them with iced vanilla! I guess that unity of opposites in life always turns out to be perfection, the devil would know it! 😉
What is your favorite restaurant dish?
I like to experiment in restaurants! For me, restaurants are a way of adventure, discovering geography, history,... Where I travel, I let my senses embark on research: I let my ear hear new tones, my eyes enjoy the colors of that climate,... and in restaurants I feed all my senses: the sense of smell, the sense taste,... and especially the eyes (the stomach can't eat as much as the eye can, especially if you're a lady). (laughter)
Do you prepare any of the traditional dishes?
I adore traditional cuisine, especially the cuisine of Šumadija where I grew up and which marked my childhood! I would single out beans and strudel with sour cherries made from homemade crusts as my favorites! I fell in love with both specialties thanks to my grandmother Jagoda, who didn't know much (that's where I drew on her, say my mom and sister) (laughs), but what she knew, she knew how to prepare fantastically! My granddaughter will tell you about my culinary skills, just like me about my Strawberry... (laughs)
All kidding aside, I fell in love with your namesake chef Traditional recipes of Serbian cuisine and after this interview I want it in my kitchen, so let's repeat the interview in a couple of months... (laughs)
Finally, and probably a topic that interests everyone - what are the fashion trends for this year?
Trends are increasingly becoming a mix of styles, cultures, shapes, forms, colors, patterns,... What is a trend and forever: is style! Follow the trends, but cultivate your own style! That way you will remain yourself and show the world that you are not part of the crowd, but a person worthy of attention!
