Mark Knopfler is one of the most interesting, talented and dedicated modern rock musicians.

He was born in 1949 in Glasgow. He is still very active today.

He officially started his career in 1965. He played in various cafes in London with his band. He was very close to his own brother David who is also a musician.

In 1997, when his brother moved to London with friends, Mark sold his flat and joined them. Together, the three of them made magic. Out of nowhere, they started making music, not to make hits and become famous, but purely for fun. So, from that party, they realized that they can do a lot together. They started recording their music, formed a group called Dire Straits and released their debut album under the same name in 1978. Their first album was solid, but it didn't make them too famous. Until they released the single "Sultans of swing", which is still their biggest hit to this day.

It is interesting that the first version of this song was acoustic, until Knopfler thought at the last moment to try out how it sounds on the electric guitar, which he had just received. From then on, Knopfler played the electric guitar until the end of his career.

The following years were solid for Dire Straits, and they were mostly remembered for the aforementioned hit. It wasn't until 1985 that they showed what they could do. They released their 5th studio album "Brothers in arms". This album is one of the 20 best-selling albums in history. With the hit tracks "Money for nothing", "Walk of life" and "Brothers in arms", this was by far their best album. After that, the group did not show anything excessively.

In 1995, the group broke up, and Knopfler started a solo career. He had some solid solo albums but was never able to replicate the success he had with Dire Straits, which is what he will forever be remembered for. In my personal taste, his best album, whether with Dire Straits or solo, is a solo album "Kill To Get Crimson” from 2007. A little country, a little Celtic music. I like all 12 tracks on it. The album is light, the instruments that appear are bright, non-fatiguing, and Knopfler's voice is gentle. I single out the tracks "True Love Will Never Fade", which starts the album, and is one of my favorites in general, as well as "In The Sky", which ends the album.

In addition to the career I have just described, Knopfler had other activities. First of all, he was a producer. The most attention should be paid to the periods when he collaborated with Bob Dylan. First, in 1979 on one of Dylan's most famous albums "Slow Train Coming", then a collaboration on one of my favorite albums, not only by Dylan, but in general, which I think is very underrated,"Infidels” from 1983. What should also be mentioned is that the two of them also released an album of tracks, which were created during the recording of the “Infidels” album, and which, in the end, were not included on that album, by Dylan's decision, and for some, in my opinion, incomprehensible reasons. That album is even better than Infidels.

It should be mentioned that Knopfler is a guitarist, who graduated from music school, as if he received various awards for his musicianship. He is known as the man who "slept with his guitar". He was named the 27th best guitarist of all time in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 best guitarists of all time, which, in my opinion, is an inappropriate position and an underestimation of his work. Also, I think it's kind of an understatement that he doesn't make the top 100 singers of all time list, because his voice is really unique. Not overly good, like many throughout history, but good enough to be remembered forever.

Overall, Knopfler is one of my favorite artists in rock music, and always will be. Some of his songs from Dire Straits or from his solo career I would listen to every day, like "Sultans of Swing", "Money For Nothing", "Walk of life", "True Love Will Never Fade" and "In the sky". In my humble opinion, they are also his best songs in his career. I believe that "Brothers in arms" is also on that list, but not so much that I could listen to it every day.
