Sustainable Development Week - Metro Cash & Carry Serbia

Belgrade, May 30, 2017 - METRO Serbia employees are participating in a volunteer campaign during which they will plant new tree seedlings in the yards of distribution centers throughout Serbia. The action was launched on the occasion of the Sustainable Development Week organized by METRO Serbia from May 29 to June 2, with the aim of raising awareness among employees and partners about the importance of sustainable business.

All activities that are carried out during one week represent a symbolic marking of what the company stands for year after year. In this way, we all participate together in the sustainability program of our planet and its protection, in order to preserve it for future generations.

Under the slogan "Get involved without excuses", during this week, the following will be organized: a day without a printer, cooking in an innovative way from leftover food and the presentation of a sustainable chef with recipes designed by an employee of the company, and the action park and connect a colleague to work will be organized , as a good example of energy saving. Those employees who have the best ideas on how to improve sustainable business in the company can also expect special awards.

As an environmentally conscious company, METRO pays attention to all aspects of the activity in which it operates. Accordingly, all packaging waste is recycled in order to be reused, while all non-recyclable material that has no reuse potential is stored in a responsible and safe manner. In the last three years, METRO recycled 2.317 tons of paper/cardboard, 280 tons of foil, 6 tons of white paper, 3 tons of machine oil, 72 tons of raw recyclable waste and 14 tons of electronic waste, and 4 tons of hazardous waste and 39 tons of harmless waste.

By installing LED lighting, closing refrigerators, replacing electrical installations of heat pumps, ventilation control systems, replacing fans in display cases and training employees in terms of energy efficiency, METRO Serbia achieved a reduction in the total energy it consumes in the period from 2011 to 2016. as much as 34,5 percent, which hardly any company in Serbia and the region can boast of.

To bake one cake at home for 30 minutes, 2 kWh of electricity is consumed, that is, approximately 8 dinars. The METRO company is giving away a recipe so that everyone can save money and contribute to the preservation of the environment. To prepare fruit bars, you need: 220g of walnuts, 200g of prunes, 30g of honey. Grind and combine all ingredients. Shape as desired.
