Despite the widespread belief that it is necessary to drink a lot of water during exercise, the latest research has shown that this practice is not only wrong, but also dangerous.

Writing for the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, a group of experts consisting of doctors, physiologists and trainers states that 'aggressive drinking of large amounts of water during exercise is unnecessary and carries great risks for the body'.

This condition is known as exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH), and the consequences vary from dizziness, nausea, confusion to more serious conditions such as swelling of the brain due to excess water.

Namely, when a large amount of fluid accumulates in the body, the amount of sodium drops sharply, causing the kidneys to be overloaded and unable to excrete excess water. It begins to be absorbed by cells, which leads to swelling of the whole body, the most serious of which is swelling of the brain, which can lead to stroke, coma, and even death.

Experts believe that at least 14 athletes have died in this way so far, writes the Independent.
