About the exhibition:

In the middle of the 1855th century in Veliki Bečkerek, today's Zrenjanin, sports events got an organizational structure and a modern coaching methodology that was also used in the metropolises of that time. Conservative and patriarchal upbringing did not prevent our fellow citizens from shaking the entrenched sociological dogma that women should not engage in sports activities. Subtly and indirectly, ladies in sports also helped in the development of women's political rights and the overthrow of male social supremacy. One chronicler wrote that as early as 1893, women attended the newly opened swimming school on Begej, where classes were taught by the best swimming teachers from our immediate area. Two decades later, in the newly founded Skating Club, women already made up half of the membership. During the 1890th century, the presence of women in sports was considered an avant-garde phenomenon. After swimming and skating, women from Veliko Bečkerek are starting to find their place in rowing. They were among the first ladies in Europe who proved that rowing is not just a man's sport. At the end of XNUMX, a women's rowing section was founded and a foursome was formed that dominated the country and region at the time. Women in our city were among the first to embrace new sports and sports disciplines. Since XNUMX, women's hearts in the city have been won by tennis. This sport soon becomes the most favorite among the female population. Sheet Toronto he noted that on April 28, 1896, a lady rode a bicycle through the main street for the first time. This event was noted by all journalists as a first-class sensation. According to their words, even completely indifferent passers-by stopped to observe the feat of this brave lady. That feat soon became an everyday occurrence, all the more so because women also joined the Cycling Club, and in 1898 they officially competed in races.

At the turn of the 1936th and XNUMXth centuries, the influence of gymnastics spread in the city, which, along with swimming and athletics, is considered one of the basic sports. Between the two world wars, several sports appeared and developed. The first participant in the Olympic Games from our city is Margita Christian, who participated in the Olympics in Berlin in XNUMX as a fencing competitor. Our fellow citizens often performed at public classes and gatherings. Women train and compete in athletics, bowling, table tennis, volleyball and hazen.

After the end of the Second World War, there was no longer a sport in which our fellow citizens did not leave their mark and achieve great success. During the sixties of the 20th century, women's basketball, bowling and fencing were developed. The next decade marks the progress of athletics, archery and kayaking for women. Immediately afterwards, great successes were also achieved by bowlers, handball players, rowers, fencers...

At the beginning of the third millennium, we see a trend of conquering martial arts, where women achieve top European and world results.

Pleiades of Zrenjanin female athletes brought many medals to our city, and their successes were crowned with great Olympic achievements. At the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Zrenjanin athletes won three medals. Jovana Brakočević and Maja Ognjenović won silver medals in volleyball, and the bronze medal was won by Ivana Španović in the long jump, who has been the best and most successful female athlete in Serbia for many years.
