You should generally not reheat already prepared dishes, but these are dishes you can't go wrong with, if you don't want to get seriously ill.

If you notice that you do not have time to prepare fresh, cooked meals at home, it is not a solution to reach for ready-made meals that you need to make wrong, because this can sometimes be very dangerous for your health.

You may not know that not all foods are suitable for reheating, either because of bacteria that are not destroyed by this method of food preparation, or because of proteins whose molecules are broken by heat.

The "Food Standards Agency" and the "European Food Information Cabinet" warn that you should never reheat these five foods.

Chicken

Chicken and other poultry, just like eggs, are often infected with salmonella, which can be a particular problem if you reheat a chicken dish in the microwave, whose waves do not penetrate all parts of the food, as when you heat it on the stove. For this reason, especially when it comes to chicken, it is necessary to turn it several times in order for it to be heated from all sides and for the waves to reach the middle of the meat.

Reheating chicken is not recommended because, unlike red meat, it has a higher protein density, the molecules of which break down differently when exposed to heat, which can lead to stomach problems.

Rice

The most important thing about prepared, cooked rice is proper storage after preparation. If rice is kept at room temperature after cooking, bacterial spores multiply and can produce a poison that leads to vomiting and diarrhea. Heating the rice will not eliminate these toxins.

Potatoes

Similar to rice, the problem with potatoes is not the heating itself, but the way they are stored. If the potatoes are kept at room temperature and not in the refrigerator, ideal conditions are created for the development of the clostridium botulinum bacteria, which causes botulism, especially if the potatoes are wrapped in foil, which means there is no oxygen supply. Heating potatoes will not always eliminate this bacteria.

Spinach and other leafy vegetables

Spinach and other leafy vegetables, depending on where they are grown, can contain a lot of nitrates, which are not dangerous, but can turn into nitrites and then into nitrosamines, which are known to be carcinogenic. They can affect the ability of the bloodstream to carry oxygen to the organs, and in young children they can lead to a condition known as "blue baby syndrome", which is caused by respiratory distress.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms contain proteins that enzymes and microorganisms can easily break down. If not stored according to regulations, mushrooms can spoil very quickly and lead to stomach problems after reheating. It is recommended that they do not stay in the refrigerator for longer than 24 hours, and it is necessary to heat them at a temperature above 70 degrees Celsius.
