In the Small Hall of the Zrenjanin National Museum on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 19 p.m., an exhibition titled "The story of the mulberry and the tradition of silk-making" by Nataša Knežević, senior curator - biologist from the Zrenjanin museum.

The exhibition about mulberry and the tradition of silk-making presents an educational and complex story that contributes to the revival of the image of the tradition that once existed among the Serbs in the territory of Vojvodina. The exhibition will show when, how and why mulberry planting was started, and the biological characteristics that determine its use in silk production will be presented. The exhibition tells about the history of silk making in our area and reveals where the first silk workers were. Also, the exhibition explains why the mulberry trees were almost eradicated and why the silk industry was suppressed and extinguished.

The exhibition is particularly significant because this topic has been little discussed until now, and the segment of silk-making as a part of tradition among Serbs has been almost completely erased.

Mulberry (Empire Plant, divided Magnoliophyta, the class Magnoliopside, a row Rosales, the family moraceae, gender Morus) includes about 100 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, originating from Asia. In the Balkans (Vojvodina, Serbia, Macedonia), in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, white mulberry was intensively planted (Morus alba L.) for the production of leaves for silkworm and black mulberry (morus nigra L.) for home processing of fruits into jam, juices and brandy. In the past, mulberry was an irreplaceable part of village life. It created shade in village courtyards, in front of houses and in yards, it was a protection from strong winds and at the same time a landmark along village roads, a place of meetings and partings, sung in numerous songs and painted in many paintings.
