Verica Poznanović

She loved him more than life itself

She loved him more than life, she broke the tradition that her family should choose her husband, she ran away for him, she didn't want to be married to someone else.

This is the story of my grandmother Sava and grandfather Lazar. Sava, born Čabrilo, married Radišić.

The beginning of World War II.

Lazar, I have something to tell you.

- Later, Savo later, where are the children? Where are Jela, Nenad, Petar?

"Mom, mom! Wake up, you're having that terrible dream again." She slowly opened her eyes and hugged Peter to her chest.

My Peter, you look most like your father.

"Mom, the war ended a long time ago, we are no longer in Herzegovina, we have returned home. We are in Stepanovićevo, we are in our house."

Tears were streaming down her face: Well, my Petre, your dad never came back, he went on a journey of no return. His bones remained on his native chest, they say in Vidovo polje. I guess it's fate, that he will return there and stay forever. The biggest wound in my heart is that I didn't tell him that we were going to have another child.

In the whirlwind of war, my grandmother gave birth under Javor, she gave birth to my uncle Borko. She was helped to bring him into the world by Mara, the wife of Aćima Radišić, my grandfather Lazar's own brother. They were thinking whether to name him Javorko or Borko. Savo, Mara told her! Let him be Borko, he is a fighter, he was born to fight. That's right! Jela, Nenad and Petar got a brother Borko.

Sava returned again to Vojvodina, to Stepanovićevo, to her house, a widow, alone with four children.

She had a hard life, but she led her children on the right path. She never got over her husband's death, she knew he didn't survive, but her heart never wanted to accept it. She often said: I thought he would just appear at the door, so handsome, stout, tall. She saw Lazar in the image of her son Peter. Life went on, children grew up and built their own nests. Winds whipped her from all sides, towards the end of her life she was hit again, more terrible than when she lost her beloved Lazar, she buried her son Petar, a son who was the image and likeness of his father. The heart broke again, with sadness. Nothing could heal this wound, she died quietly, before the dawn of a new day. As Dawn awoke, her candle slowly went out. It was December, the snow was blowing, many were preparing for New Year's Eve, snowflakes were flying everywhere. Silently, as she lived, so she left. She found her eternal home next to her beloved son Peter. Lazarus' bones remained in Herzegovina.

My dear grandmother, I had to mention your wife Mara, a wonderful person, you loved her very much, but I would be unfair if I did not mention your best friend, grandmother Lika.

You were inseparable all your life, watching over and comforting each other.

My dear grandmother, rest in peace, I hope you found your Lazar, Peter, Nenad and Jela.

Because they also left this world after you. I believe that you and grandfather will meet again in another life, because you loved each other like travelers through time, from here to eternity.

One Lazar was born again, one Petar, maybe Nenad, Jela will be born again in the family...

Your granddaughter, Verica – Vera Poznanović, born Radišić

Dad's daughter Verica, Vera whom dad Petar called by her real name only when he was angry about something, for him she was always Baćko.

That's why Baćko's kitchen!
