An old recipe for hazelnut balls from 1925

What kind of cakes were prepared and eaten at the beginning of the 20th century? That will tell us an old recipe for hazelnut balls, published in the magazine Ženski svet, January 4, number 1/1925, 1925, edited by Jelena I. Zrnić and Aleksandra Jovanović.

Hazelnut balls

After spicy dishes, it is pleasant to taste something sweet. Here is a recipe for hazelnut balls.

For these cakes, which are as beautiful as bonbons, you need 1/4 kg of ground hazelnuts, a quarter kg of fine sugar, juice of half a lemon and 2 whole (smaller) eggs.

Knead in a bowl and mix on an open fire, until a dough is made. The hot dough is rolled into balls, which are dipped in boiled chocolate (wine glass of water, 1 bar of chocolate and 2 teaspoons of cocoa), and then rolled in coarsely grated (with a knife) chocolate.
