On Wednesday, September 08, 2021, World Dumpling Day will be celebrated for the second time in a row. In order to celebrate World Dumpling Day in the best possible way, we bring you a recipe from Grandma Nada's cookbook!

The end of August and the beginning of September brings us fresh plums in the markets, as well as a new crop of fresh potatoes. It is also the period when recipes for preparing homemade dumplings are most often searched, and September 8 is the day when this traditional delicacy celebrates its World Day.

So that you don't have to search the Internet, and in anticipation of World Dumpling Day, we bring you a recipe taken from Grandma Nada's recipe collection.

Recipe for preparing dumplings:

  • 1,4 kg of mashed potatoes
  • 0,4 kg of soft flour
  • 1 kg of plums
  • 75 g butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 40 g of vanilla sugar
  • 500 g breadcrumbs

Put the washed potatoes in their skins to cook. You'll know a potato is cooked when the skin starts to crack or when you can easily reach the center of the tuber with a fork. To ensure that all potatoes are cooked equally, choose tubers of the same size.

Peel the boiled potatoes while they are still hot, mash them by hand and make sure that small pieces of potato remain. When you are near the end of the kneading process, add the butter to the mixture to melt it.

Remove the potatoes and place them on a flat surface to knead the dough.

Add two eggs and vanilla sugar, while adding the flour gradually, until the dough stops sticking to your hands.

After you have kneaded the dough, leave it in a heap, and take 60 grams of dough for each dumpling. Press it with your hands to make room for the plum, then wrap the plum on all sides and roll it in a few circles so that the dough does not have any holes. Place the wrapped dumplings on a baking sheet sprinkled with flour so that the dumplings do not stick together.

If you want sweeter dumplings, you can remove the pits from the plums and add a cube of sugar.

Melt the butter in a pan and add the breadcrumbs. Fry it in butter until it gets a nice brown color, taking care not to over-fry it.

Drop the wrapped dumplings into the boiling water a few pieces at a time. After the dumplings have risen from the bottom of the pan to the surface, leave them in the boiling water for another 2 minutes, after which they are taken out. Strain them slightly and put them in a pan with breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the dumplings with breadcrumbs on all sides.

Your dish is ready, serve it with sugar in a bowl next to it or jam.

Gather family and friends, enjoy, and share your prepared dumplings on social networks with #svetskidanknedli and #worldknodelday

Who all loved dumplings?

Nikola Tesla - from the book "Nikola Tesla's Menu in 60 Stories" by Predrag Puzić, we learn that the famous scientist was a sweet tooth and that among other things he enjoyed dumplings prepared by his mother Georgina, while he also loved Czech dumplings with bechamel sauce and finely chopped almond.

Mozart - the famous composer of liver dumplings with sauerkraut and black beer.

Emperor Ferdinand I - The Austro-Hungarian emperor who was remembered for the saying: "I am the emperor and I want dumplings!". He didn't care what time of year it was, when he wanted dumplings he had to get them.

Green Tooth (iconic movie character) – Green Tooth's favorite food is sarma and dumplings.

Why 08.09.?

Three symbols are found in this date.

  1. The end of August is the time when plums ripen, so September can generally be considered the month of dumplings.
  2. Everything is more beautiful in a couple! Two dumplings next to each other have the shape of the number 8.
  3. When the number 8 is placed in a horizontal position, we get the sign for infinity. Dumplings have survived in their original form for over 2.000 years, which is a good indication that this tradition can last indefinitely.

How can you celebrate World Dumpling Day?

  1. One of the best ways is to prepare them according to your mom's or grandma's recipe at home.
  2. A simpler way, but certainly just as good, is to get dumplings at a specialized dumpling store or at a nearby store where you can find them frozen.
  3. Gather your family or friends and enjoy dumplings together.
  4. Share a photo of the dumpling on social media with #svetskidanknedli or #worldknodelday
