Some know and some don't what it is bulghur – nothing else but processed durum wheat.
So, bulgur is not a type of wheat like, for example, kamut. Wheat is processed both thermally and mechanically to produce bulgur. It can be used to prepare both salty and sweet dishes.
It contains a lot of nutritious ingredients. Experts claim that bulgur is more nutritious than couscous and rice. For a nutty taste, you can toast bulgur in a pan (just like buckwheat).
Bulgur is prepared as follows:
- Pour 1-1,5 cups of boiling water over 2 cup of bulgur and cook for about 10 minutes at a low temperature.
- The amount of water varies depending on the fineness of the bulgur. (Best to follow package directions.)
A suggestion for salty bulgur is Bulgur salad, for which you need the following ingredients:
- 1 cup cooked bulgur
- 1 tablespoon of roasted sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon oil of your choice
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- 100 g of grated cheese of your choice (or a mixture of several types)
- parsley leaf, pepper, soy sauce - to taste
Preparation:
- Combine all the listed ingredients.
You can eat bulgur prepared this way on its own or as a side dish with a vegetable or meat dish. (You can add: ajvar, pinđur, roasted pepper, sour cream...)
A suggestion for sweet bulgur is the Bulgur Treat, for which you will need the following:
- 1 cup cooked bulgur
- 1 tablespoon honey (or to taste)
- 2-3 spoons of ground walnuts
- 2-3 tablespoons of raisins
- 2-3 spoons of ground (raw) sesame seeds
- vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, orange peel - as desired.
Preparation:
- Combine all the listed ingredients and season them to taste.
You can decorate the dessert prepared in this way with whipped sweet cream.
These are the simplest suggestions. You can use bulgur for various stews, soups, pilafs, sarma...
