Fruit Roses - another simple recipe picked up in Malta from my dear friend Phyllis, and very versatile. It's easy to make and looks fantastic.

  • 1 kg of sweet dough
  • 3 kg of apples (sweet)
  • apricot jam
  • powdered sugar
  • cloves
  • cinnamon
  1. Make any sweet dough that does not rise. By choice, it can be fast or not.
  2. Peel the apples and cut them into thin even slices. By first cutting the apple in half, then cutting the halves into slices.
  3. Add apples to water with cloves and cinnamon and cook for about 10 minutes until they soften a little. They should not be cooked.
  4. Roll out the dough and cut it into equal strips 4 fingers thick. You should get 12 strips.
  5. Arrange the apples on top of the dough so that they overlap (that's why the slices should be thinner and equal) all the way to the end. Half of the slice is on half of the dough, and the other half sticks out (this way, when you roll up, you will get the shape of a rose).
  6. Spread the jam on the other half of the dough. We use apricot jam, but you can put any (it's important that it's not too thin).
  7. Fold the half of the dough spread with jam upwards so that the apples are half covered.
  8. Roll the dough (taking care not to move your apples) into a rose shape. From left to right.
  9. Place them in a muffin tin. It will open a little more.
  10. Place in a preheated oven at 180c until the dough is baked.
  11. Remove and serve sprinkled with powdered sugar.
If you want, you can also decorate it with chocolate, colored whipped cream or whatever you choose.
