Today is St. Basil the Great, Little Christmas or Serbian New Year 🙂 After Christmas, this is another holiday that has its own special bread - vasilice : )

I know that my mother regularly kneaded them, coated them with honey, and then we licked off the honey so that there was as little of it as possible, because we ate vasilice with a prepared lunch. After a long time, I again enjoyed these soft vasilikas with my family, I remembered my childhood and all the dear people who are watching us from somewhere and watching over us 🙂

Make as many Vasilica as there are household members because everyone gets their own which symbolizes health, happiness and progress 🙂

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar

Vojvodina Vasilice - preparation:

  • Add sugar and crushed yeast to a lukewarm mixture of milk and water.
  • Mix the flour with the fat and gently rub it with your hands to get a crumbly mixture.
  • Add flour to the yeast, add salt and knead a smooth dough that does not stick to your hands.
  • Cover the dough with cling film and a clean cloth and leave it in a warm place for 1 hour to rise.
  • After that, divide the dough into 3 equal balls, that's how much we make at home, knead it a little more and leave it for 20 minutes in a warm place.
  • Turn on the oven at 200 degrees to heat it up, and use a rolling pin to roll out buns about 0,5 cm thick.
  • Lightly sprinkle the baking sheet with flour, place breadcrumbs, and use a fork or a straw to pierce the initials of the householder on the top. Everyone will get their own vase.
  • After 10 minutes, place the tray in the heated oven and bake the vasilice until slightly golden brown.
  • Take them out of the pan, sprinkle a little cold water on top, wrap them in a clean cloth to cool down a bit and remain soft.
  • Coat the vasilica with honey and serve it with the holiday lunch.
