Representing her team, the ambassador of Sweden in Serbia, H.E. Anika Ben David pointed out that the embassy tries to be a good example in environmental protection, that they recycle all waste, while green waste is sent for further processing to become biogas. "We drafted the first internal regulations on environmental protection of the embassy and switched to purchasing exclusively green electricity. We are examining possibilities for the production of solar energy", said the ambassador.

She added that there are no plastic cups or cutlery at the Swedish National Day celebration, that all food that remains will be composted and the waste recycled.

Ambassador Ben David reminded that Sweden is Serbia's biggest donor in the field of environment and that it cooperates with the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the European Union on accelerating reforms within the EU Green Agenda with the intention of helping Serbia prepare for EU membership. She said that this year our two countries are marking 105 years of diplomatic relations, in the year when Sweden adopted a new, seven-year strategy for development cooperation. As a long-term development partner, Sweden supports Serbia with more than 10 million euros per year through grants. She also emphasized cooperation with civil society organizations with which they work together to strengthen the democratic development of Serbia, especially through the engagement of young people in the field of the environment.

Last week, Sweden hosted the Stockholm +50 conference, a high-level global meeting on environmental protection, just as it hosted the first United Nations environmental conference half a century ago. Serbia was one of 59 countries chosen to conduct consultations in which key priorities for environmental action were identified. "More than five hundred citizens participated in the consultation and one of the most important conclusions is that young people should be involved in decision-making as much as possible," said Ambassador Ben David.

Speaking about Swedish support to local self-governments, the ambassador said that in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the European Union, they launched a waste separation reform in 17 municipalities last week in regions where more than 800.000 citizens live. "We have completed preparations for the construction of wastewater treatment plants in Nis and Čačak. Tonight you can see the exhibition and practice how to separate waste", said the ambassador of Sweden, H.J. E. Annika Ben David.
