Zlatibor and the entire area that surrounds it captivate with magical beauty. The nature is unbelievably lush and is a real balm for the eyes after the dreary everyday life in the city. The water is clean and healing, and the Zlatibor air, the result of the merging of currents coming from the Alps, the Carpathians and the Mediterranean, is so clean and refreshing that you can't breathe enough of it. It would be wonderful if we could bottle that air and take it with us into the city smog... Well, we can't do air, but we can certainly do Zlatibor specialties 🙂

Zlatibor is a gastronomic paradise for all lovers of traditional Serbian cuisine, as well as for all people with a healthy appetite. After a walk in the fresh air, you will feel a real, primordial hunger, and with the abundance of specialties, it will be a real struggle to decide on just one. But one by one, we have no doubt that you will try them all. From the wide range of delicious dishes, we recommend that you definitely try the following:

Zlatibor prosciutto

Zlatibor is a widely known air spa, due to the specific air currents encountered in this climate. The benefits of clean air have a beneficial effect on the people, but they are equally grateful for the production of dried meat, for which this region is widely known.

In the village of Mackat, which is located 13 km from the center of Zlatibor, almost every other house has its own drying room for prosciutto production. The national event "Pršutijada" is also held in this village, which attracts numerous guests from the country and abroad every January. Why? You will discover the answer when you try prosciutto from Mackat, either beef or pork. Carefully selected best pieces of meat, smoked just as much as necessary to obtain a specific smell and taste, will not leave even the most demanding palate indifferent. Pleasant!

A set of buns

If your first thought was that you can eat a complete bun in Belgrade and any other city in Serbia - you are only partially right. The set of buns is a specialty of the Zlatibor region, the traditional method of preparation and the exact recipe are jealously guarded, so nowhere does it taste like here. This gastronomic delicacy does not contain meat, but "only" cream, eggs and pre-melt, but because of the pre-melt it smells like meat and tastes even better.

Forget about cutlery, when tasting a set of buns. It is eaten with the fingers, by tearing the upper part of the bun into pieces, which are dipped in the lower part. Enjoy the unforgettable taste of the queen of Zlatibor specialties.

Zlatibor lamb

There is almost no person who has visited Zlatibor without trying lamb. If she has, we hereby invite her to correct her mistake as soon as possible, because this Zlatibor specialty is the best in Serbia, if not beyond.

Pastures with a variety of medicinal herbs, clean water, the specific climate of this region, as well as the traditional method of preparation, give the meat a widely known taste and smell. Zlatibor hosts say that the meat must be turned on a spit, over high heat, for 4 to 5 hours, with constant supervision. The meat must be cooled for at least half an hour before cutting and serving.

Zlatibor cheese and cream

In the villages scattered on the slopes of Zlatibor, most of the houses, in addition to the traditional household, also have small wooden houses called "mlakare" in the garden. Magic happens in the vats - cheeses and cream are produced, which leave no one indifferent. They are an indispensable part of many dishes, as well as the famous set of buns, and it is up to you to decide whether you prefer young cheeses and cream, which have a mild taste, or older ones, which have a strong and specific smell and taste.

In the wide range, you can choose between goat, cow and sheep milk specialties, and we definitely recommend that you try them all at the market in the center of Zlatibor.

Pine honey

The original pine honey is made from the resin collected on the needles of conifers. In this climate, there is no such resin, so pine honey is made from the needles themselves. This honey is a medicine for the respiratory tract and regular consumption is recommended even for healthy people, in order to prevent colds and strengthen the whole organism. The honey has a specific dark color and a completely different taste than the lowland types of honey. We hope you remember to take a jar of this natural remedy home with you.
