How does alkaline water help?

For most people, "ordinary" water. is the best. According to Katherine Zeratsky (RD,LD), alkaline water it has a higher PH level than ordinary water, and those who promote the use of alkaline water claim that it can neutralize the acidity of the bloodstream, activate and accelerate the metabolism and allow the body to better and more efficiently absorb the nutritional ingredients of food. Some even claim that alkaline water helps with some diseases and slows down aging, but research has not proven such claims.

Some studies suggest that alkaline water can help with bone problems, but further research should confirm whether it has an effect on bone mineral density and whether this positive effect can last for a longer period of time.

Kathryn Zeratsky graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, interned as a nutritionist (dietitian) at the University Hospital and Clinic of Iowa, and is a member of the professional team at the Mayo Clinic.

Alkaline water - how to make it yourself?

We will briefly explain how you can make your own alkaline water.

Determining the pH level of water

Before any other activity about making alkaline water, you would need to find out the pH level of the water you are using to make alkaline water. Since it is difficult to find the right laboratory equipment for determining the pH level of water, use bottled water that has its pH level written on the declaration.

Note: Waters with a pH value of 7 and above are considered "ordinary" or "normal" water. Waters with a pH value below 7 are considered acidic waters. After you alkalize the water, its pH level should be roughly between 8 and 9 on the pH scale.

Alkalization of water with additives

  • use baking soda - add 600 mg of baking soda to 2 dl of water (glass) and mix well. Baking soda has a very strong alkaline composition. When baking soda is added to water, it raises its alkaline level. Note: if you are on a salt-free diet, do not use baking soda, because it contains a large percentage of salt.
  • use lemon - lemon is anionic, so when you drink water with lemon, the body reacts with the anions from the lemon, which gives the water an alkaline effect. It is best to use filtered water or bottled water with a declared pH value above 7 (normal). You must use a lemon that has not been sprayed. Cut the lemon into eight pieces. Add lemon slices (do not squeeze them) to 2 liters of water. Cover with cling film and leave for 8-12 hours at room temperature. You can add one teaspoon of Himalayan salt, if desired. Note: Himalayan salt mineralizes the filtered water, from which you make alkaline water. If you use bottled mineral water, there is no need to add Himalayan salt.

Note: Alkaline water and lemon? Lemon does not make water alkaline, but creates an alkalizing effect in our body, thanks to its very low sugar content and high mineral alkaline content.

Alkalization of water with filters

If you use water filtration systems, check if you can get ionizing filters or reverse filters (hyperfilter). Check with the manufacturer what pH level the purified water has and whether it meets the criteria for alkaline (pH level between 8 and 9).
