More than 20 different bioactive ingredients can be found in chaga mushrooms, and some of them attack cancer cells and prevent further development.

The medical name for chaga mushrooms is Inotus obliquus, a black-brown mushroom that belongs to the Hymenochaetaceae family. They grow en masse on older birch trees and have a corky texture. Unlike many mushrooms, chaga mushrooms have neither smell nor taste. In colder parts of the world, chaga is abundant and can be grown in the wild. They can only be separated from the trees with the help of a saw or an ax and that in large pieces in the shape of a cube.

Just soak one piece of chaga mushroom in hot water and you can make tea. Chaga is popular in the folk medicine of North America, Finland, Poland and the northernmost parts of China and Japan, while in Russia it has been used as an anti-cancer medicine since the 16th century.

There are currently 135 scientific texts on this mushroom, 44 of which are related to cancer treatment. One noted: “Out of 48 patients in Poland in 1957, 10 were treated with chaga mushrooms, and the effect was shown in tumor reduction, pain, improved sleep and mood, and increased appetite. Most of the patients were women who had cancer of the genital organs or breast cancer. In a 2015 experiment, anti-cancer compounds were extracted from chaga powder three times using 60C water. Alcohol was used to extract the other ingredients.”

This is important information for all those who want to make their own chaga mushroom tea, in order to extract all the necessary ingredients properly, without losing them.

How to make your own chaga tea? You can buy ready-made chaga tea online, in the form of powder or capsules. But if you want to judge the freshness of the tea yourself, you can get it in pieces from Siberia and Maine. Simply take part of the chaga mushroom, put it in a bowl, and pour warm water over it. Let it stand for about an hour.

Be careful not to use boiling hot water. You can use a mushroom cube a maximum of three times. After you melt it with water, you can put it in vodka, since alcohol can extract more ingredients that water can't. You can also put some rubbing alcohol in the water solution to protect it from dirt. When you're ready to use it, you can heat it up and it's ready to drink.
