Research by scientists at the University of Uppsala has shown that drinking milk increases the mortality rate and contributes to bones becoming more susceptible to fractures, exactly the opposite of what you thought until now.

In Sweden, a study was done in three counties, where data were used and where 61.433 women between the ages of 39-74 and 45.339 men, between the ages of 45-79, participated, where they were followed how much milk the study participants drink, and the study was published in the "British Medical Journal".

What was the end result? The surprise was not small when the study showed that in women who drank milk, at least three glasses a day, the risk of death was twice as high as in women who drank milk less than one glass a day! In addition, it was found that consuming a large amount of milk increases the risk of bone fractures.

Women who drank three glasses of milk a day had a 90 percent higher risk of death, a 60 percent higher risk of hip fracture, and a 15 percent higher risk of other bone fractures than women who drank less milk. In men, the differences in the mortality rate were less pronounced, and when it comes to bone fractures, no difference was observed.

Also, pediatrician David Ludwig, in a document published in the "Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics" pointed to the fact that the risk of bone fractures is lower in countries where milk is not consumed and points to the fact that there are other sources of calcium.

Among other research in the "American Journal of Public Health", a study was published, which showed that those who drink milk, perhaps, increase the risk of bone fractures by 50 percent. In addition, with this research, scientists have shown that calcium does not protect bones to the extent that was assumed. Several studies on calcium supplementation have found that it does not reduce the risk of bone fractures. In those studies, vitamin D was found to be more effective in reducing this risk.

In men, various studies have shown that milk and milk products increase the risk of prostate cancer by 30-50 percent. Also, we should not forget the important fact that about 65-75 percent of the world's population has a reduced ability to digest lactose, sugar from milk and dairy products.

If talking about other and different sources of calcium, kale must be mentioned, because one cup of raw kale is full of calcium, which means that 3,5 cups of kale salad provides more calcium than one glass of milk. Legumes such as beans, peas and chickpeas are also rich in calcium. Of the fruits, oranges contain about 60 mg of calcium.
