Drying out your body - dehydration

In every living cell, tissue and organ, apart from oxygen, there is pure water. We cannot live without it, and we cannot live well without enough water. The need for water increases as we lose it, and we lose water with every breath and every activity of our body. We are especially at risk of dehydration when we are sick, then even mild dehydration can take its toll, leaving you feeling tired and lacking in energy. Anyone can become a victim of dehydration, even young children, and the elderly and people with chronic illnesses are at the greatest risk.

Dr. Julie Scarano, doctor of chiropractic, believes that it is better to prevent dehydration than to treat it. She also reminds that the 23 intervertebral discs in the spine have a high water content and that dehydration can be associated with back pain.

Here are some tips that will help you in prevention - to avoid dehydration:

  • Choose what to drink wisely. Avoid or limit consumption of industrial fruit juices, sodas, alcoholic beverages and sugar-rich sports drinks.
  • Drink a glass of water during and between meals, as well as before, during and after exercise.
  • Plan your outdoor activities only during cooler periods of the day.
  • Eat foods that are rich in water content, such as fruits and vegetables.
  • Be sure to take a bottle of water with you as soon as you go outside.
