Homemade dried figs and is it possible to dry figs at home?

Now, when it's the season of figs, a unique Mediterranean fruit tree that grows in our conditions in the city, we should use it as best as possible.

There are 5 figs in my orchard, 2 of which are very large. I usually made a couple of jars of jam from them, and we would eat the rest or they would be left on the tree. Last year I froze 90% and last winter we ate them for dessert.

This year I decided to experiment a little and try to dry figs at home without adding anything. I wandered around the internet a bit and every text talked about how figs are sulphured, then immersed in salt water...

I didn't like it at all and I don't have the conditions for such a thing, so I decided to do it my way. For drying, I chose the smaller type. Drying is a long process, but I succeeded. I decided to share my experience with you.

Thus, fans of figs, especially if they have their own, can preserve them in this way and have them sweeten or make a cake even when it gets cold and when they are no longer in the orchard.

Now, when it's the season of figs, a unique Mediterranean fruit tree that grows in our conditions in the city, we should use it as best as possible.

How to dry figs, what you need:

  • 3 kg of fresh figs (smaller)
  • 2 oven trays

How to dry figs, procedure:

  • Check that the figs are not overripe and that each one is healthy.
  • Wash them and dry them immediately, although I did one round of drying without washing and it turned out to be better.
  • Place baking paper on an oven tray and place the figs on the paper with the stem facing down and press each one with your finger to flatten them. This amount is enough for 2 oven trays.Picture 203
  • Turn on the oven at 60C degrees, with the hot air option, and insert the trays into the oven.
  • Leave the figs to dry and you are free to go to sleep or do something else, if you decide to dry them during the day.
  • Since my electricity is cheaper at night, I put them to dry for 24 hours. and turned off the oven at 8 in the morning, when there is no cheaper electricity.
  • In the evening, I would turn on the oven again in the same way and dry them for another night. Do not be afraid that it will dry out. In my case, drying lasted 16 hours, with breaks, but you can do it all at once.
  • Since I dried the figs in two trays, I would change their places the next day.
  • After this time, take the figs out of the oven and let them cool.
  • Pack them in a box and put them away.
  • To be safe, I still put them in the freezer, because I wouldn't want them to spoil.
  • When you need them, you can take out as much as you need and put the rest back in the freezer.

Tips:

This is how I dried 4 rounds, with the fact that I dried 2 rounds shorter, somewhere around 10 hours, and the rest were more juicy and soft, but I used them for eating. A few every day and we ate them.

You can determine the length of drying yourself in relation to whether you want them to be more or less dry. If you have a dehydrator, feel free to use it for drying. That's the whole philosophy behind drying figs. Nothing complicated and you get figs that you know have not been treated with any chemicals. The only thing is that they aren't the same yellow color, but believe me, the color is not important, but the fact that they are healthy and they taste even better than the ones from the store.
