When we go on vacation to Greece, the first thing I think of is gyros 🙂 I love a lot of Greek dishes, pies, desserts, and above all fruit, but somehow I always feel with Greece, after the sea - the first association is gyros.

My first encounter with Greece was back in 1990 and gyros was love at first sight 🙂 We changed places of residence, I tried various gyros, but it never happened to me that I didn't like it. I don't know what the secret is, but apparently some magic exists?

The first smell of food I smell is the smell of meat turning on a vertical grill, sometimes I'm not even hungry, but that smell entices me to stop and watch the preparation and serving. I like it best in pie, now I eat it without sides, although gyros without sides are not real, but that's why they always put more meat than I can eat. It is also good served as a portion, the choice and method of preparation of meat is important, but my favorite is gyros in a pie.

After gyros, and such an abundant lunch, dinner is not even necessary.

And while I'm in Greece, I try to arrange my meals so that I still eat gyros several times, sometimes we change restaurants, but mostly we stay at the first one because according to some unwritten rule, even looking at the crowds at the restaurants, we always choose the best one. Gyros for welcome and gyros for parting is a ritual of ours that we never give up 🙂

And Greece is not just gyros. You should try many things, and you should definitely eat fish in a fish restaurant. I'm not much of a fan of fish, but freshly prepared sea bream is especially delicious.

And while my husband was busy with fish, I enjoyed Greek moussaka. The combination of eggplant and potatoes is foreign to us for moussaka, but Greek moussaka is just like that. Some restaurants prepare it better, some not so well, but you certainly won't regret it if you try it. I even learned to make it and it comes in handy for a change in the menu.

And how would lunch in a tavern be complete without souvlaki or grilled pork. Now more and more souvlaki are prepared from chicken, but somehow it is better and tastier than pork.

If you want to prepare souvlaki, it is not difficult when you bring spices from Greece, but you can also combine what you have on hand to make an excellent specialty. If desired, choose the meat and read the method preparations : )

In Greek cuisine, there is a lot of meat, of course also fish, and when you get tired of all that, you can prepare something yourself. At any time of the year, you can buy good quality vegetables, there is usually a butcher with a large selection of meat, so preparing a meal will not take much time. Potatoes are especially good for them, and I'm always surprised that we don't have that type, and we are well-known producers of high-quality potato varieties.

Bakeries always tempt me with their pies, various pastries and increasingly diverse breads. If we are bigger producers of wheat than them, we cannot boast of a better quality of bread and pastries. It seems to me that we have commercialized a lot and moved away from classic breads and pastries, and the Greeks keep exactly that and the quality of their bread is at a high level. I especially like their traditional bread made from a mixture of corn and wheat flour, which keeps its freshness for a long time no matter how it is stored.

I especially stop by the bakery for my favorite spanacotiro pie. Staying in Greece and not having pie for breakfast at least once, of course homemade sour milk is a must, as if you've never been there.

After a morning walk by the sea, we stop at a bakery, and there we are greeted by a crispy and ruddy warm pie, which I would start eating already on the way to the room.

I make it when we feel like it, but I've never rolled out pie crusts myself, so if you want to prepare it, take a look recipe.

And while we are talking about food in Greece, I must not leave out my favorite drink on the beach - frappe 🙂 Under an umbrella and on a deck chair, with the sound of the sea and a crossword puzzle or a book, I slowly drink my coffee to start the day.

And after lunch and afternoon home-made coffee on the accommodation's terrace, fruit must be served. The sweetest grapes and watermelons are in Greece and that's why we use the opportunity to sweeten ourselves with delicious fruit. Now in May there are still no grapes, it was kind of strange to me that we won't eat them, but the watermelons are sweet and we enjoyed them 🙂

We are not small, but we like to treat ourselves to ice cream sometimes. There are more and more good Italian ice creams, but somehow I always choose the specialty of the pastry shop and I have never regretted it. The ball is much bigger than here, the ice cream is fattier, and as I have tried the ones in Italy, I can say that they are not behind them in terms of quality.

The husband still claims that his best ice cream was in Dubrovnik. I didn't eat it there, but you, if your trip takes you there, be sure to try the ice cream on Stradun 🙂

I won't write about the prices here, it's not much more expensive than having lunch in a restaurant here, but you should try their specialties during your stay in a country, because when the years pass, memories of certain good tastes remain.

And what would a lunch in a restaurant be without cats. They are everywhere, but when they smell the food, they immediately come to the table and just watch you. They are non-aggressive, very calm and quiet, so you can take pictures of them.
