As it turns out, sugar and not so "cute". In addition to causing obesity and diabetes, consuming sugar-saturated foods is linked to a number of brain disorders, including impaired memory and cognitive performance.

On the Quora website, where experts answer questions, there was also a question about the harmfulness of sugar, which was answered by doctors and professors from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

Not all sugars are bad. Our bodies turn most of our food into sugar. Good glucose, or glucose, is found in carbohydrates like bread and pasta. Another type of sugar is fructose. When we consume it from fruits and vegetables, it is not harmful, but if it is consumed from foods such as juices, any processed food, condiments and salad dressings, fast food - fructose can be harmful to health.

"Fructose does not stimulate hormones like insulin, which is important for satiety," said Dr. Kathleen Page, a professor at the Keck School of Medicine.

Sugar is addictive. It only takes one bite of sugar to stimulate the brain to release dopamine, a natural substance in our brain responsible for our cravings and motivations. The same substance causes alcohol and drug addicts to be constantly under the influence.

The respondents who participated in the study of this school were faced with a difficult choice: do they want to be served delicious food immediately, or do they want money sent to their home address in a month. Before the actual test, some subjects ate glucose, and others ate fructose.

"Subjects who consumed more fructose voluntarily gave up money to immediately eat high-calorie foods," said Dr. Page.

Sugar affects skin aging. Too much sugar breaks down the collagen and elastin in our skin, which help the skin repair itself. Once these premature wrinkles appear, there is no way to get rid of them.

Sugar dulls our sense of satiety. Frequent and excessive consumption of sugar can damage the sensor that protects us from overeating. When our brain does not release hormones that signal that we are full, we continue to eat.

Sugar reduces our brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which helps our brain learn and remember new information. When BDNF levels are low, we are not very capable of learning new things. Some studies have found a link between low levels of BDNF and Alzheimer's disease, depression and dementia.

Eliminating sugar from the diet can cause the same reaction as giving up drugs - chattering teeth, anxiety, tremors.

"The best way you can reduce your fructose intake is to reduce your consumption of added sugar sweeteners. ”
