What kind of food to prepare for a long car journey?

When you're on a long car ride, you can easily fall into the temptation of fast food and unhealthy snacks. Planning ahead and preparing nutritious meals can make driving much more bearable and keep your energy levels high.

What food to prepare for a long car journey is a question that many travelers do not think about in time, and then you can find yourself in a situation where you have to rush extra or simply fail to get everything you need.

You don't have to spend too much time stocking up on food for a long drive, but it's definitely not a good idea to leave it until just before your departure. Marko Petkovic from the car buying agency often takes long drives and reveals tips on what food to prepare when traveling by car.

Why bring your own food on the road anyway?

You're going on a long trip, we're assuming you're driving on the highway, you might be wondering why bother packing food for the trip when there are plenty of motels and restaurants you can visit? True, there are restaurants, but the fora is next.

Restaurants as restaurants are definitely a more expensive option. Besides, roadside restaurants are specific in one thing - they don't expect customers back.

What it means? Well, imagine that you need to do something for a person who you know you will never see again in your life. Would you go out of your way as much as you would for someone you want to come back to you?

It does not necessarily mean that all restaurants on the road are like this, but we believe that their standards are quite lower than for a restaurant in the city center.

Avoiding restaurants will save you money and you'll know exactly what you ate.

When we talk about restaurants, we think of whole meals, but we must not forget the snacks. A good reason to prepare all the groceries before departure are inflated prices at pumps and shops along the way, where prices are certainly higher than those in local stores.

What do you need?

For food, it will depend on the length of the trip, but we'll assume you plan to be on the road for two days. You need a portable refrigerator in which you will pack perishable foods, and we will assume that you have breakfast before the trip at home.

With that in mind, these would be the rough provisions for two days meals per person:

  • First day on the road
    • Lunch: 3 boiled eggs, 1-2 slices of bread
    • Snack: a handful of nuts - 50 g (mix almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts)
    • Dinner: 200 - 300 g of baked chicken fillet with with rice (50 gr)
    • Fruit tree
    • Water: 2 l
  • Another day on the road
    • Breakfast: referee with yogurt
    • Lunch: 3 boiled eggs, 1-2 slices of bread
    • Snack: granola bar
    • Dinner: 200 - 300 g of baked chicken fillet with rice (50 g)
    • Fruit tree
    • Water: 2 l

A little clarification: Boiled eggs are great because you can cook them all at once and keep them for a couple of days without any problems, and eggs are a very nutritious food. When it comes to bread, it's best to opt for oat or rye bread, because it takes up less space than ordinary white, is significantly more nutritious and keeps freshness much longer.

Chicken can also be prepared "in bulk" and kept for several days, and is an excellent source of protein and vitamins with a low calorie count. You can also store rice in advance in larger quantities for later.

Pack some fruit too which you can eat on the go - bananas, apples, oranges.

If you are planning a long trip, avoid preparing food with toppings and sauces, but stick to dry food. Too, pay attention if you are making sandwiches in a couple of days, ie avoid sour cream, tomatoes and other foods that get stale after a few days.

Don't forget to drink fluids

It is not uncommon for the body to send us mixed signals, that is, to confuse thirst with hunger. When we are in the car, we are often occupied with other things, whether we are reading a book, watching a movie or listening to music and looking out the window.

In those situations, we can forget to drink liquid, and when we finally feel thirsty, we think we are hungry. Keep enough water for everyone present (1 l per person for 4 hours) and hydrate regularly. This is especially important for the driver.

If you don't like to drink plain water, add cucumber, fresh fruit or stevia to give the water flavor and keep it fresh. calories at a low level.

Do not forget to fasten the refrigerator well so that the food does not fall over, prepare utensils and towels. It is not bad to be informed about traffic regulations in Europe if you cross multiple borders.
