Belgrade, June 8, 2021 - On the occasion of World Ocean Day, which is celebrated on June 8, METRO Cash & Carry launched a global initiative to reduce the use of plastic. The multi-year project, launched worldwide, aims to encourage in various ways more than 16 million METRO professional and other customers to reduce the use of plastic and the generation of plastic waste.

In Serbia, the METRO initiative was actively joined by partners and suppliers Bolton, Unilever Retail, P&G, Coca-Cola HBC and Henkel. As part of the initiative, they offered consumers packaging for their products that have a lower impact on the environment, can be recycled or are made of recycled material, do not contain plastic, or have it to a lesser extent or can be composted.

"As a leading wholesaler, we are aware of our responsibility and role, and that's why we launched this initiative with our partners and suppliers, which is primarily aimed at our professional customers, in order to enable them to make their business sustainable and efficient." At the same time, the initiative is an appeal to all consumers to choose options that create less waste, especially plastic that ends up in nature, rivers and oceans, when choosing food and products. We will help them in that, because we have committed to replace the packaging of our own brand products with sustainable alternatives by 2025," said André Rinnensland, General Director of METRO Cash & Carry Serbia.

The global partner of the initiative is the Canadian organization Plastic Bank, which conducts collective activities for the collection and recycling of plastic waste around the world. METRO Group will donate funds to this organization for further work. At the same time, the company reduces the amount of plastic in the packaging used for its own brands and introduces biodegradable products into its offer, with a smaller impact on the environment. In addition, numerous initiatives are being implemented in order to protect the environment, in accordance with the goals of sustainable development of the United Nations.

During the celebration of World Oceans Day, we highlight and focus on the global goal of sustainable development under number 14, which refers to the preservation of the world's oceans. Ocean pollution, for the most part, comes from the land and reaches a worrying level, on average, there are 13.000 pieces of plastic waste in every square kilometer of the ocean.
