Serbian scientific television: Music as a reward for the brain

"Listening to new music is a reward for the brain, according to the latest research. Using magnetic resonance imaging, a Canadian team of scientists found that reward-related areas in the center of the brain become active when people hear a song for the first time.”

The more the listeners enjoyed what they heard, the stronger the connections were in a region of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. "The nucleus accumbens is known to be associated with reward," said Valorie Salimpour, Ph.D., of the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto. "However muzika is abstract. It's not like when you're really hungry, and you're anticipating some food, so you're excited about it, which is where activity in the nucleus accumbens would normally be detected.”

"In an experiment, scientists played 60 excerpts of new music to nineteen volunteers, based on their musical taste. While listening to the 30-second recordings, they had the opportunity to buy the ones they liked from a fictitious online music store. By analyzing the MRI scans, the scientists found that the nucleus accumbens was activated and depending on the level of activity, the researchers could predict whether the participant would buy the song. It is part of a new direction in which neuroscience is moving, which through brain activity tries to understand what people think and influences their thoughts and motivations as well as their behavior.

The researchers found that the nucleus accumbens also interacts with another brain region called the "auditory brain store" that stores information based on music people have been exposed to in the past. They now want to establish how this affects our musical taste.
