A perfect day on Sithonia - Athos - Mount Athos
A perfect day in Sithonia - visiting Sithonia, especially Sarti, and not going on an excursion around Athos would be a big mistake and one less experience. From the first moment I set foot in Sarti, Athos caught my attention.
It can be seen from every corner of Sarti; sometimes in a fog or mist from the moisture from the open sea, sometimes in the clouds, but when it shines in full glory on a clear day - the feeling of being close to the Holy Mountain fills the soul and body with tranquility and gentleness. All those pictures and stories about the part of Athos, which is inaccessible to us ordinary citizens, appear before my eyes and the desire to see them, even from afar, immediately arises.
And then the day of the cruise comes, the fear of being at sea all day is mixed with excitement, and the trip I've been waiting for a long time begins. Seagulls circle the ship, cameras and mobile phones click, the guide's story mingles with our shouts of delight, and Athos in the distance. Is there a more beautiful image that should be remembered and immortalized?!
And the monasteries are lined up. Each one is beautiful in its own way, but the two that we saw caused the exclamation of delight and disbelief: the monastery of Saint Panteleimon and the monastery of Simonopetra. The first attracts attention with its size, brightness and color, which shines in the sun and remains visible for a long time even after moving away from it.
And the other one stands majestically on the cliff, a gazebo neither in the sky nor on the ground, and it makes you think: how was it built on such a terrain and how is it reached and everything that is needed for life in it is delivered?
And while I look at the monasteries, listen to the story about them, in my mind I step on the forbidden ground and my body is filled with indescribable joy and peace. Like never and nowhere before, I feel proud to belong to a part of humanity that has left such beauty, preserved spirituality through the ages and survived thanks to faith. Monasteries were destroyed by fire, they were rebuilt from the ashes, but they were never erased and forgotten.
They stand on that proud and sublime Holy Mountain to remind generations and generations of believers, as well as those who are not, that faith strengthens the spirit and body, but also warns that we should never forget its importance for the survival of the people who believe and fight for the freedom of all humanity. .
We didn't see our Hilandar, but we all looked for him somewhere behind the hill. His image appeared in front of my eyes and his desire to last for a long, long time to be the pride of many generations, as a memory of Saint Sava and the birth of Serbian spirituality and the church.
And at the end of such a meaningful cruise, on the way back I take another look at the Holy Mountain - as a memory and unforgettable, that at least one day in my life I was so close to the source of the spirituality of the Orthodox peoples of Europe.
