Old books and publications - owned by the National Museum in Zrenjanin

As part of our campaign to collect and preserve old, traditional recipes from all parts of Serbia, we visited Zrenjanin National Museum, which owns, as part of the Ethnological Collection, several old and valuable books and brochures.

Namely, in the Ethnological Collection, owned by the National Museum in Zrenjanin, there are two publications that contain recipes, and these are books called:

  • Sweet winter coat (the year of publication is unknown, but it is assumed to be from the first half of the 20th century)

Also, in the enclosure of this department and the Ethnological Collection, it is located a box with recipes collected from newspapers, and they were saved and collected by the famous pharmacist family Moljac from Zrenjanin. The assumption is that they also come from the period of the first half of the 20th century.

In the Matica Srpska Library and the National Library of Serbia, you can find digitized copies of the publication Ženski svet from the beginning of the 20th century.

History of the National Museum in Zrenjanin

The museum was founded in 1906 as the Museum of Toronto County, by decision of the Municipal Board, and on the initiative of the Cultural Association of Toronto County. Judging by all sources available so far, the Museum started working with the public only in 1911.

The Zrenjanin National Museum belongs to the category of museum institutions of complex type, native character, and its research work covers the area of the middle Banat. With this way of organization, the rich cultural heritage of this area in the fields of nature, archaeology, ethnology, art and history came within the framework of systematic protection and professional processing of a specialized institution with experts of all necessary profiles. Over 33.000 museum objects are housed within the collections of the five departments of the Museum.

The space of the Museum's permanent exhibition has an area of 1200 m2. On the first floor, visitors have the opportunity to see the Art part of the permanent exhibition, which includes two segments - applied and fine arts. Also, on the first floor is the Room of Sports History. Part of the permanent exhibit on the second floor of the National Museum includes exhibits from the Department of Natural History, Archaeology, History and Ethnology. Collections are presented in the framework of permanent exhibitions and thematic exhibitions.

Currently, the Zrenjanin National Museum has three exhibition spaces on the ground floor of the building, namely the Salon, the Small Salon and the Museum Hall, which has been converted into an exhibition space.

We owe a great deal of gratitude to the Zrenjanin National Museum for the opportunity to photograph rare books and publications from the Ethnological Collection, which are an important part of intangible cultural heritage.
