Strudel with jam - I got the jam and vanilla bean from my daughter who was in Mauritius. Mauritius is said to be one of the most beautiful destinations on earth.

The unusual bird that most people met in childhood while reading Lewis Carroll's novel "Alice in Wonderland" still attracts the attention of scientists today. The dodo bird or large dodo (Raphus cucullatus) is an extinct species of flightless bird that lived on the island of Mauritius. Dutch sailors, who hunted it during their stay in Mauritius, are believed to be responsible for its extinction. The dodo bird was easy to catch because it was not afraid of people. There is information that the Dutch landed on this island in 1598, after which the population of the dodo bird began to decline rapidly.

Also, in a paper published in the journal of the University of Oxford, the influence of animals, which the Dutch brought to the island, is also mentioned. Pigs, dogs and rats fed on the eggs of this bird. The combination of these factors disrupted the natural community, after which the story of the dodo disappeared from the face of the Earth.

Strudel with jam, ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 3 eggs,
  • ½ l of milk,
  • 1 tablespoon fat or butter,
  • 20 g of fresh yeast and
  • 1 kg of flour.

For the filling:

  • 200 g of jam and
  • 1 vanilla pod.

Strudel with jam, preparation:

  • Beat the egg whites with sugar, then add the egg yolks, which were previously beaten with fat (butter).
  • Dissolve the yeast in warm milk, then combine with the eggs. Gradually add flour to obtain a smooth, soft dough that should not stick to your hands. Leave the dough to rise.
  • When the dough rises, make 3 balls and roll them out one by one to the thickness of a finger. Fill with jam with the addition of a chopped vanilla stick and twist into a braid.
  • Line a round pan with baking paper, put the strudel and leave it to rest for another half hour. Bake at a moderate temperature for about 40 minutes. When it is ready, sprinkle it with powdered sugar, if you like.

The strudel is wonderful, the jam gives it a special charm, the jam is made of papaya and vanilla, although you can cover the strudel with any jam. I chopped the vanilla stick, which smells divine, into small pieces and scattered it over the jam. Everyone liked it, the neighbor asked what it was that smelled so good. She was eaten in an hour. My son would say, as usual, my mom adds something of her own – who would chop up a vanilla stick and add it to jam? She likes to ruin…
