Only when Novak Djokovic mentioned gluten, it became clear to many. In recent years, many people have been complaining about a series of unpleasant symptoms... You guessed it, it's wheat!

It is estimated that 99 percent of people who have gluten intolerance or celiac disease are never diagnosed with this problem. You can be one of them. If you have any of the following symptoms, there is a possibility of intolerance to this protein.

  1. Digestive problems such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and even constipation. Constipation is especially prevalent in children after meals with gluten.
  2. Keratosis Pilaris (or the term domesticated in our people as goosebumps) is very common, and it is characterized by the appearance of crusted plugs on the skin, most often on the outer and back sides of the upper arms. This may be the result of poor absorption of fatty acids and vitamin A caused by intestinal damage caused by gluten.
  3. Fatigue, blurred vision, or feeling tired after a meal containing gluten.
  4. Diagnosis of autoimmune diseases such as: Hashimoto thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, lupus, psoriasis, scleroderma or multiple sclerosis.
  5. Neurological symptoms such as dizziness or feeling off balance.
  6. Hormonal imbalance, such as PMS (premenstrual syndrome), PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) or unexplained infertility.
  7. Migraines.
  8. Diagnosis of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.
  9. Inflammation, swelling or pain in joints, such as fingers, knees or hips.
  10. Anxiety, depression, mood swings and ADD (attention deficit disorder).

HOW IS GLUTEN INTOLERANCE CHECKED?

One way to determine if you have a problem with gluten is to eliminate it 100 percent from your diet for at least two to three weeks and then reintroduce it. Keep in mind that gluten is a very widely distributed protein and it will take you several months or even several years to eliminate it completely from your body. If you feel significantly better without it or worse when you reintroduce it into your diet, gluten is definitely your problem. Suspicion of celiac disease can be removed with 80 percent accuracy through a blood test for the presence of antibodies to gluten.

For an accurate diagnosis, a biopsy of the mucosa of the small intestine is necessary.

HOW IS GLUTEN INTOLERANCE TREATED?

By completely eliminating gluten from the diet. Even a trace amount of gluten from cross-contamination, from food, medication or supplements, can be enough to trigger an immune system reaction. Experts state that those who have celiac disease, and include gluten in their diet only once a month, increase the risk of death by 600 percent.
