Belgrade, May 11, 2022 - In order to reduce organic waste and reuse resources, the company METRO Serbia recently started composting organic waste in its store on Vidikovac, in Belgrade.
As part of this initiative, METRO contributes to the reduction of organic waste that would end up in landfills, through composting of unsold items from the fruit and vegetable department. Organic waste, which can no longer be sold, is disposed of in special containers, specially designed for storage. Further, the organic waste is taken to the place where the composting process is carried out, which produces natural fertilizer, which significantly affects the health of the soil, suppresses pathogens and strengthens the immunity of plants. In this way, the store in Vidikovac reduced its municipal waste by as much as 30%.
METRO Serbia, as a food wholesaler above all, is particularly proud of this program, which is aimed at reducing organic waste, which would end up in a landfill, as municipal waste without the possibility of further use. The idea is that this initiative, as a true example of a circular economy, in which organic waste becomes a resource that can be used again and again, will be further developed in other sales facilities.
Aware of its role as a wholesaler, METRO on a global level takes responsibility and steps towards strategic sustainable business and environmental protection, through programs that will contribute to climate neutrality by 2040, avoiding the creation of plastic and food waste, as well as continuing to expand the range of sustainable products.
