In the Salon of the National Museum of Zrenjanin on Thursday, May 11, starting at 19 p.m., the exhibition of the Ethnological Department will be officially opened Blessed are we children that we are so small - Childhood in a traditional family.

The goal of the exhibition is to present the culture from this area in a narrow thematic manner, and in that segment which is the most important for the extension of the human lineage, which is raising a child. The exhibition provides information about childhood and the cultural pattern that was known to the traditional patriarchal family from Vojvodina from the end of the 19th to the second half of the 20th century. The authors of the exhibition and its accompanying catalog are Branka Babić, curator-ethnologist and Rajka Grubić, MA, museum advisor.

Since the priority goal of marriage was children, we will find out which magico-religious actions were practiced to obtain healthy offspring, what number of children was desired in these areas, but also what dangers the child was exposed to in the first days after birth. The visitor will be able to see the difference in the two basic types of cradles that appear in these areas, as well as to understand the importance attached to this part of the household inventory. At the same time, great attention was paid to the first steps, so the exhibition will include a dubak dating from 1910. When they first appear and what baby carriages looked like in the first half of the 20th century will also be presented at this exhibition.

The exhibition will also feature textile items related to infant care, such as bedding, pillows and cradle covers. On this occasion, the baby's first clothes will be exhibited - a cap, a beanie and a shirt. Later, each child's transition from one status to another was marked by a change of clothes. Thus, children are dressed the same when they walk, in a long shirt, while when they go to school, they get a two-piece outfit that symbolically represents an adult.

One part of the exhibition will be dedicated to toys and children's games. We will see from which materials the toys were made in rural areas, and where the wealthier bought toys for their children. We will make a distinction between toys and games for girls and boys, since the game was intended to influence the socially expected behavior of children. Thus, through the game, the girls were preparing for the role of mother and housewife, while the boys were developing different types of skills that are expected of an adult man as the host of the house.

The exhibition consists of objects and photographs from the collections of the National Museum of Zrenjanin. However, in order for the picture of growing up in a traditional patriarchal family to be as complete as possible, cooperation was also achieved with other museums in Vojvodina. Thus, the exhibition will include objects and photographs from the Museum of Vojvodina, the National Museum of Pančevo and the City Museum of Vršac, as well as photographs from private family albums. Some of the photos from private albums were acquired through the kindness of the Melene heir Ivan Bobo Bošnjak (Paunović, Bošnjak, Letić, Kostić, Željski-Arambašić and Rakić families).

Museum for children it is designed to bring cultural heritage and the museum closer to the youngest visitors as an institution, but also as a place of learning through play. In a specially created space, toys from different periods are exhibited - from prehistoric times to the present day. The exhibited toys bear witness to how children played in the past, what materials they were made of, and how they differ from modern ones. Through them, the "small museum" presents various areas through which children learn about the world around them: nature, everyday life and various social phenomena. In this museum, children get to know the exhibition in an interactive and fun way and develop an awareness of the preservation of objects. The competent curators in the Zrenjanin museum are Branka Babić, curator-ethnologist and Nevena Dujin Grković, curator pedagogue.

With the opening of these exhibitions, the National Museum of Zrenjanin marks the beginning of the manifestation "Museums of Serbia, ten days from 10 to 10", which is being held for the third time this year. From May 11 to 20, the museums of Serbia will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 22 p.m. with various contents. The event ends with the celebration of the European Night of Museums on May 20, during which the National Museum of Zrenjanin and other participants will be open from 17 p.m. to 01 a.m. with free admission and various programs!
